Speedomter in-op, Need Help

I have a 2001 Ford E-450 with a 6.8 L Automatic. The speedometer works intermittent and when it does work it only will go up to 40MPH. Even on the highway it stays on 40MPH. Sometimes it wont work at all.
Ive been told there is a Vehicle speed sensor in the trans.and the rear end housing. Is there two of them? I also heard the one in the rear end is for the ABS?

I believe the one in the rear does it all, for the abs, the cruise, the speedo and the road speed reference for the tranny computer. Do you have any other error lights? Is the tranny shifting ok?

I just replaced the sensor in the rear diff. and the speedo is still not working?
I don't have any error lights and my transmission shifts a little rough.
Anything else I can check?

for the shifting rough part, first thing I would do is check/flush the tranny fluid. only other thing I can think of off hand is that your speedometer cable is wearing out not too bad a fix, just takes some time, and prolly needs changed, that or the speedo itself is wearing out, I would go to a junk yard and pick up one just too make sure of this. Also, I know that for the 92-98 models, (not including the 97 and up 150) there is a problem with the wiring harness getting caught inside the steering column and wearing through, causing stuff to quit working (currently I have a 94' that I think this is happening too, cause I have no illumination or cruise control myself) If all else fails you can check it or go to ford and see if they might be able to think of a quick solution for this (if its a common problem that is)
