hi there..can anyone tell me whats the best way to clean a carb, so that it looks real good on the out side, any info would be nice...
Carb cleaner and shop towels. Spray it, let is set, and wipe before it dries. REPEAT a few times. If it's an eldelbroc, after using the carb cleaner, use Mother's polish. Dont forget to lube all the carb linkage after you clean it. I assumed it's still on the vehicle. If not, take it apart, soak it in a liquid bulk carb cleaner, then rebuild it.
Spraying with carb cleaner is not enough. The carburetor needs to be completely disassembled and the metal parks soaked in a gallon can of Chem Dip for an hour. After that, everything needs to be sprayed off with carb cleaner. Then the internal passageways need to be sprayed out with compressed air.
If your carb is as gooped up as mine was with grease and road grime you will need a Parts Cleaning Brush or a good, stiff nylon bristled brush to scrub off the thick stuff...maybe even a soft brass brush too depending. I also used a dremel too with a nylon brush to get the crevices of the carb body.
Afterwards you can use a polish like the "Mother's" as previously suggested or I used a clear, High Heat Engine Enamel.
...AND if you're going to tear it all down and reassemble please just get a rebuild kit and make it good as new.
