Tire imput

I am looking to buy some new tires for My truck. I live in upstate NY. where the weather is Crappy most of the time in winter(snow, ice,etc.). My truck is right at 7300 lb. with Me and My tools. I have really heavy duty leaf springs in the rear(seven of them about 1/2 inch thick).

I was looking at the icelander Green diamond Which I had on My 96 f150. Best tire I have ever owned for winter driving. For My F250 super duty super cab full bed 4x4 and as heavy it is The dealer I talked to said I would be lucky to get 15 to 18 thousand miles out of them. Not good at $150 a piece
He said My best bet would be the General Grabber AT2. Has anyone had a set of these and what was the outcome (performance, wear, traction, etc.)

Maybe somebody has a different tire that they would recomend.

Any help on this would be great!!!!

Thanks
Ron

Just bought the Goodyear Silent Armor for my 04 F250 Harley Davidson. Was rated as a very good tire. I had the Goodyear AT/S which were very slippery in the wet.

Yeah I just looked at those Goodyear Silent armor today when I was getting a rotor turned. Long story for another time. They looked like a really meaty tire but I wonder how there are in the snow. What did you pay per tire snd450 if you do not mind telling Me?

I've had the Silent Armors on my truck for almost a year now.....275/70-18 - OEM size. They are outstanding in the snow. The Continentals (OEM) were terrible in the snow and pretty much anything else besides dry roads. The Wrangler Silent Armors have the snowflake symbol on the sidewall (indicating severe snow rating) and they live up to it. We got some decent snow last year and they took me everywhere I went in 2WD with no problem.

I paid $184 per tire in January last year but they have gone up since then. Shop around and you'll still probably be able to get a decent deal. I've got right at 7,000 miles on them now and no noticable tread wear.

I had the BFG TA A/T KO's on my Expedition 4x4. I got around 60-70K out of them and thought they were awesome. I'm really struggling with weather to put them on the 18" winter rims I have for my '06 F-250 PSD CrewCab.

I think it's going to be either bite the bullet for BFG's or look for a little more value priced tire like the Cooper Discover ATR. Just not sure if I'd regret trying to save a little money. These would likely be only winter tires for me, since I have 20" rims for the summer.

I currently have good tread left on the stock Continental (I've never driven them, they came as the second set with the truck...I just bought this summer). I've yet to put them on for the winter.... I'm a little worried about what I hear about t these tires for winter.... I'm in Minnesota.

The BFG All Terrain T/A KOs are a really good tire from what I hear. My guy at 4 Wheel Parts has also turned me on to the Pro Comp All Terrains, which are a Severe Weather rated tire. I am personally running Yokohama Geolandar AT/S'es on my 02, and I use them for snow plowing in the winter. I personally really love them and they handle snow and the nasties well, as well as doing pretty good in dirt and mud if you need to go off road.

I am not real happy with the BFG ATs (actually an AS tire IMO) that came stock with my '07. While they are a great tire for towing and have decent dry and rain traction, snow and mud traction are below average.

IMO, go with the Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor or the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO with the severe snow rating. Make sure you stick with your stock load rating (D or E) and make sure whoever you purchase them from has a road force balancer.

Honestly, the road force balancer is a great tool, but not really needed for your everyday car or truck. Basically, any place with trained techs and a good, calibrated machine are more than fine for mounting and balancing tires.

While that may be true, you need to remember that the Super Duty is much heavier than your average car. If you search the forum, you'll find numerous examples of members who had vibration or pull problems after purchasing new tires that were cured by going to a shop that had a Hunter GSP 9700 Road Force Balancer.

Here is a link to the balancer's web site if you want to read why it is important.

Hunter GSP9700 Wheel vibration Control System solves wheel vibration and tire pull problems that balancers and aligners can?t fix

My wife had the general grabbers on her expo, they are a soft rubber tire and wore quickly, but traction was o.k. though, but no snow here.

I got the tires installed with a roadforce type balance for $620.00 at a local Goodyear store. so far they are great.
I know the owner so I got a really big break on the tires.

Well tomorrow I get the new tires. I went with General Grabber AT2.
$736.00 Installed. They say they are going to clean the rims inside new valve stems and computer balanced. What sucks for them is I will be right there watching. I have never done business with theses folk but it is the only place that has these tires in stock around here. Within 75 miles.
I normally do business with My brother-in-law but he could not get the tires until january. I probably could have saved $100 or so but I need them now.

I would like to thank everyone for the feedback very helpfull
Thanks
Ron
