2004 4x4 Ranger Shift Problems

I have a problem with getting in to 1st, to 2nd, or reverse on my ranger. I don't drive it to much during the week. It seems to be the worst when the truck has not been driven for a day or two. And ideas what could be the problem??

Manual or Automatic? Have you checked the fluid level and the condition of the fluid?
