PB Blaster is not the King

I found this thread in the GA forum.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...se-winner.html

It seems that a 50 50 mix of ATF and Acetone is the best for removing rusted bolts. I am very curious about this where as the salt from the roads here does a number on the under carriages of our trucks here. I am going to mix up a batch to use next time I have some wrenching to do. Any one else want to play mad scientist and post up the results?

I sell both in my store, so I will bring some home and see how it does.

Never heard of the ATF trick. I'd give it a shot.

When I lived in VT & NH, I'd always oil undercoat my vehicles and I'd spray my folks vehicles too. Just use bar and chain lube and mix it with a little used motor oil. Then spray underneath the truck. We used an air compressor syphon sprayer. It works great. After you spray, start the truck to warm up the exhaust and get the oil off of it, then take it down a dirt road. Just don't wash under the truck all winter. Come spring time, spray it off.

A friend of mine uses his old motor oil and sprays under his trucks and campers. He spends a lot of time at the beach and none of his stuff has any rust on them.

My truck's undercarriage is already rusted pretty bad. PO put some crappy undercoating on and al it did was trap moisture and flake off. Great. Is there anything that can be done at this point? I haven't been losing sleep over it, is it something to worry about?

Zep sells a product called Zep Preserve that puts PB blaster to shame. I dont think its sold in stores.
indsupply.com - Industrial Supply

On a quick search this was all I found. It works great. I've used it for years.

I have used the mix using synthetic ATF and it works well. Haven't used it on extremely rusted bolts but it seemed to work quite quickly on what I had to loosen. Here is a table that I copied from a farm forum about it.
----------------------

April 2007 issue of Machinist Workshop Magazine. They arranged a subjective test of all of the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a scientifically rusted environment.
Penetrant: Average Load:
none 516 ft lbs
WD40 238
PB Blaster 214
Liquid Wrench 127
Kano Kroil 106
ATF-Acetone mix 53

Some believe that synthetic ATF improves the mix still further.

------------------------
That had to be one badly rusted or very large nut to require 516 ft/lb to loosen it. Most bolts would have twisted apart before reaching that torque.

Is that ATF mix dangerous to any rubber or plastic part that may be close to the rusted bolt or nut?

It works great, especially in high salt areas.

The acetone would probably be more damaging than the the ATF but I see what you are getting at. Probably wouldn't want to let it get on paint either or else wipe it off quickly.

I have used Acetone on a rag to remove the left over glue from decals on work trucks before with no bad results. All the trucks were white for what it is worth.

Here on the farm we always have used ATF to free up rusty chains by soaking the chain in it overnight.

I used Penetrol by Schaeffers yesterday during my trans install. Seems to work really well.
