Starting this month, my truck doesnt turn over every now and then. When you turn the key you just get a click from under the hood. If you cycle the key quickly a few times she would eventually turn over and start, but today I can not get it to turn over. I just replaced the solenoid under the hood with no luck. Also, the batteries are strong, and the starter is only 5 months old.
X2 what he said. Pull the starter and have it tested. If you have a "Shunt" style Amp gauge place it over the cable to the starter and have someone attempt to start the truck, read the amp gauge, it will probably peg the meter.
Sounds like connections to me. Take off every cable and every connection and clean every surface/terminal thoroughly.
I had this happen to me at McD's once with the wife and she'll never let me forget it. Held up the whole drive-thru lane for probably 10 minutes till I could get the truck started again.
All it needed was clean contacts.
I had the wife-mod and the sister-in-law mod both witness mine doing the same thing for the first time today. I'm sure I won't be allowed to forget it either.
Going to check the contacts first, but if that is all the problem is, recreating the problem for verification is difficult if not impossible.
When I had the CLICK CLICK problem, I had my wife turn the key while I smacked the starter with a hammer. It turned over and I knew for sure the problem was the starter.LOL
I didnt feel like pulling the starter that I had just recently installed until I tried all the other options. I put on all new battery terminals, cleaned the battery lugs to a shine, and installed a new solenoid. Still, just a click. I arced the solenoid on the fender and she started, this doesnt make sense unless the one I bought was bad right out of the box.
Wierd. It was the starter, my buddy turned the key while I tapped it with a hammer. Fired right off. I would have thought a rebuilt starter would last more than 5 months.
Thanks everyone!
I had a starter that only lasted a little over a month. Apparently the rubber plug fell out of the bottom. I was over my Mom's (Outer Banks) out on the beach, I thought the tide was going out but in reality the tide was coming in. I had to drive through the water (salt) to get out before the tide came all the way in. It left me at a "7-11" one morning. I had a nice passerby crank it while I smacked it with a hammer, nothen but big blue sparks! It just left me there w/no warning. This may have also contributed to my brakes problems that followed soon after. Lesson learned: salt water, stay away from it if possible.
