$825 Pinion & axle seals

is this reasonable for the pinion seal and both axle seals on the front at the dealer (would have 1yr warranty). or should i take it to an independent mechanic. My buddy (mechanic) was supposed to do it but has not gotten back to me. Have another highly recommended shop but the dealer has it right now for an oil change. they won't have the parts til Monday so looking for feedback. Was going to do it myself but i do not want to mess with trying to line the gears back up (understand it is difficult). also if I can only expect $100 less at an indy - i'd rather have Ford do it. BTW 4x4 works fine, but the seals are wet. I have a vehicle to drive so not huge inconvenience (besides the fact that it's a GMC 1500). Thanks in advance, Mike. rig is in my sig but 06 4x4 EB Expy 36k miles.

Shesh, I'm in the wrong line of work. $825 is absurd for this job. The job should top out at no more than $300.

Dammit - they did tell me it was 6 hrs labor and I can not get another shop around here to touch. Called 3 places this morning. I guess I can try a different dealer and see what they say. Nobody here wants to mess with resetting the pinion.thx for the replies, Mike

It's not a hard job for a DIYer. I did it both jobs myself for the first time about a month ago. It took me a total of about 5 hours. Your can do this job. All the info you need is already right here on this site. Total cost for both jobs was $96 (1 pinion seal, 2 axle seals, 3 Qts of Royal Purple diff fluid, 1 bottle of blue thread locker & 1 tube of black permatex).

lol, I guess these 300 dollar jobs pay for the 100,000 dollars in equipment that was purchased in the last two years at our shop

So you overcharge customers that come to your shop to help finance your business expansion?

Well - guess I'll be making the contribution. I called two other dealers and they were in the same ball park. I am relatively certain I could do it - but don't want to risk it as it is my daily driver for now and soon to be the wifes. Also, when she saw all the parts left over from doing the rotors - she told me I have to pay to get it done (yes truck stops great and makes no noises and no wobbling). I am also happy that it will get a 12/12k warranty. I am aware that the truck was wrecked back in 05 even with the clear title - if there is a larger issue, they will cover that portion. Seems odd to me that the seals are leaking after only 30k. i have beat up a lot of 4wds and never had just seals start to leak. i have popped some rear ends though and learned the very expensive term hydrolocked at a young age on a brand new Toyota (twice). Still did not find an indy that would do it. Thanks for the replies, Mike.
