Yeah there are also 2 filters available at the parts stores for the 6.0s. There is usually a sheet in the box with the filter describing which to use. If you have an external spring on the shaft in the housing you need to use the filter with attached screw on cap. If you just have the plastic spiral on the center shaft in the housing you need the separate filter, and to reuse your screw on cap.
As far as I know there is only 1 filter to use in a 6.0 Motor Craft does not offer more than 1 filter part number for the 6.0 years 2003-2007. If your parts place offers 2 numbers run to the closest walmart and buy a fram or motorcarft, or you will have the same issues as the OP.
To the OP I think you can buy the housing, but you would have to contact a Ford or I/H dealer to get that answer. Maybe conatct Ed at Y2k Ford parts hes awesome to deal with and will get you hooked right up. Tell him your from FTE.
I dont think the housing cghanged at all. I think what they are selling is a universal or will fit filter that comes with a filter cap...not good. Then they sell a filter that works with the stock cap. I would stick with a MC, Fram, I/H, or anyother of the Racor branded filters.
I will always spend the extra $$ for the right filter than end up with problems, possibly a lot worse than what the op has.
