6.9 overcharging
need some words of wisdom.a couple of weeks ago my batteries were dead overnight and being I had replaced one of them 5 weeks earlier (didn't want to take the hit for both at once) I replaced the second but again I was dead in the AM.
after checking the wiring I checked some voltages and found I was charging about 16.5 at 2k rpm's. replaced the volt regulator and no better.stopped at the alt. shop and he said I was ok but after further investigation I found the field wire was drawing almost 4 amps with the key off.I replaced the ignition switch but still the same so I regrounded the alt and volt reg.no better then I checked the field term on the alt and found almost a dead short between it and the case. called the alt shop and was told this was normal. any ideas where to go from here?
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
Something sounds wrong with the field wire having voltage when the key is off.

Does the A or I terminal of the voltage regulator have power when the key is off?
thanks
wish I would have found this site years ago!
