'01 Edge 4.0 with less then 9,000 miles. Since new it makes a knock when cold. Sounds like it's pinging, and premium grade fuel doesn't stop it. Anyone else having problems with this. There appears to be several service bulletins out on it, but I don't want to pay for them ( too cheap) unless I have to.
I've heard it said that light knock is the sound of fuel economy.
If premium doesn't take care of it... Hmmm...
In theory your dealer could fix it two ways, retarding the spark timing or adding more EGR. Retarding the timing could hurt fuel economy. Increasing EGR might help fuel economy, but hurt driveability (roughness).
For me, I like to hear light knocking at WOT on regular.
BUT, if I'm planning to carry a heavy load or take a trip up into the mountains I don't want to hear any knock, so I fill it with supreme.
If it only happens when it is cold, I would not worry about it too much. My 1991 Ranger would knock all the time no matter what gas, but it had over 100,000 miles before I got rid of it and the engine still ran great.
If you know the number of the TSB, go to the dealer with the number and ask the service writer for a copy because you are having this problem and the vehicle is still iunder warranty.
