I Have an E4OD in a 90' F350 with 4.1 gears. My TC is shot (weak lockup) I need advice on a replacement. I tow and plow and do plan on adding a large Trans cooler. Also need insight into shift kit to save the clutches while plowing and towing. I just got the truck and am trying to work the bugs out, any info is appreciated very much. Thanks in advance.
I would just put another stock replacement in there. Always worked fine for mine. I have the C6 and have been plowing and towing and playing for 5-6 years with no problems. Just make sure you have good tranny fluid levels at all times and maybe add some lucas tranny stopslip to help with the heat levels. A trans cooler would be a great add on, especially for towing and plowing.
As for the shift kits, i havent had any experience with them, but would also like some input on having one. What all would be a benifit of having one for our applications, etc...
I am in the middle of Michigan. We get hot summers and fairly cold winters. I plan on trying to add a cooler to the transfer case as well, I saw some figures once on how hot that gets (300-400 F),yikes!,since it's filled with ATF. In regards to the reply about the stock replacement I think the E4OD and the C6 take different TC's, the C6 has no lockup and E4OD does? I wonder if the stock replacement TC has a strong enough lockup for the E4OD.
Add a Powerstroke trans cooler, deep trans pan and synthetic ATF. As for the transmission, A converter from a Navigator would be better than a stock replacement being that it has fully brazed internals, but it's still a single disk lock-up converter.
An even better option would be a multi-disk lockup converter with brazed internals and a billet front cover; A little more pricey but it's a much stronger option.
