Hard Start diesel

1993 7.3l glow plug relay cycles about every 3 seconds. ngine will not start unless very arm weher or engine block heater lgged in.

I bet you have some bad glowplugs. You can test each one or just throw in a complete new set. Only use Motorcraft/Beru plugs.

Glow plugs

Be absolutely sure it's not the relay gone bad.
I've twice had this happen when the plugs were not bad.

Hard start Diesel

Thanks for the info. I found a broken battery cable on the driver side battery and after repair the engine spins fast enough to fire up.

I still have the glow plug relay clicking every 1 second for aproximately 15 seconds and then stops so I fear getting stranded with an unknown.

I plan to check all the glow plugs to see if there is a problem there.

Relay

It is normal for it to cycle on and off until the engine warms a bit, that's how it is supposed to work.
Unless it is still not firing up from cold, I would say it is working.

proper glow plug opperation with a cold engine is key on, the wait to start light should stay on for 15 seconds or so, then you will hear a click from under the hood for another 15-20 seconds.
