I have a '86 f150, 351 4bbl, 4x2, standard cab short box. Now what i want to do is to convert it to 4x4. i have a c6 with transfer case. but i was wondering is about the axles. I want to use straight axles. what axles do i use and does the frame width cause any problems? What year and model truck would i have to get them from?
My understanding is a '78-'79 Dana 44 will bolt in wit a 6" lift to clear the bulky TTB crossmember. Was planning this swap on a buddies truck but he got a F-250 instead and we're doing a Dana 60 swap in place of the TTB 50.
Also I understand a stock Dana 44 TTB from any '80-'96 F-150 or Bronco will more or less bolt in to a 2WD F-150. I wouldn't bother with any independant front though. Granted I never broke TTB 50s except ball joints (frequently!), but the Dana 44 TTB is a weak flimsy axle and not worth wasting your time on.
