03 EXPY NAVIGATION SYSTEM
I have been working with a dealer to order a new 2003 Expedition. One of the options we are looking at is the navigation system. No one seems to know much about it. Do you have to pay to use it? Is it satelite driven or CD driven. I keep getting different answers. Anyone who can help, I would appriciate it.

It used CD's. Not DVD's like some systems (e.g., Acura). You have to insert different CD's for different parts of the country. It determines your position using satellites. Have not heard how well it works. I left it off of my '03 for two reasons: (1) Because it uses CD's; and (2) because if you get it you lose the in-dash CD player on the Eddie Bauer (goes back into center console.
I've heard that ordering it will slow down delivery of your truck, but that may have changed by now.

I have it on my 03 EB and it is great. It is a standard GPS reciever (antenna hidden in right rear glass). It is not a subscription service. It determines your location by utilizing Global Positioning System satellites. The Maps come on CDs (About 7 covers the entire US)and the GPS overlays your position on the map very accurately. It even talks to you nad tells you where and when to turn. It will have problems when surrounded by tall buildings such as found in large cities (because it cannot recieve the radio signals from the satellites, but otherwise a great system!! I work it all the time and you become proficient very quickly. My 12 year old was showing the salesman how to operate it in an hour.
