I picked up my truck from the dealer today. The head gasket repair is going to be very
pricey so I must either sell something or save up some cash.
However, after sitting for the past few weeks, the brakes are phenomenal. Firm pedal.
Engage as soon as you put any pressure on the pedal. They are intermittently this good.
Usually, I get halfway to the floor before they really start grabbing and I really have to
put some effort in to bring her to a halt.
Today, they feel like I could stop on a dime and give change.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this could be happening? I can't find a rhyme or
reason behind it. I have been driving this truck for over 50,000 miles now and I can't
find a pattern as to why sometimes the brakes are great, and sometimes they just seem
like they don't want to perform...
When was the last time they were flushed? Could be there is water in the system...after sitting for extended periods...brake fluid is a water magnet and water could be filling a void left by low fluid in the system and eventually boil or evap away leaving brakes spongy after more constant use. Another thought is that the older brakes lines get they become brittle inside creating tiny one-way check valve flaps, allowing fluid to stop and then takes longer to return back to the reservoir, also leaving a spongy sensation in the pedal and most times hanging up a pad or two. If you haven't flushed then within 2 years, I'd suggest doing so. Hope that helps.

Hell, it is worth a shot. She never really sits for any extended time. This little stint at
the dealer was the longest she sat since I have owned it. I'll see about getting a flush
done. I would love this truck so much more if I had some consistency in the brakes.
Well, that and the whole EGR/head gasket thing...
