I have an 1985 f250 with a 460 engine. I pulled my 5th wheel camper about 3 hrs away this past weekend. going up the ride was perfect no problems. On the way back we were going to pass someone so i gave it some more gas and it backfired through the carb. It never cut off just backfired then went on. It did this two other times before comming home. I noticed the electronic box on the fender was hot. Plugwires are that old, could it be that or the distributor? Runs/idles perfect any other time other than when u try to get in a hurry like to pass someone. Any suggestions/help will be appreciated.
I have a E350 motorhome that used to backfire thru the carb, I replaced the stock carb with an edelbrock, that some say was too small. It was roughly the came cfm as the stock one but would backfire thru the carb when I tried to accelerate up hills, it was really bad and only remedied by greatly enriching the fuel ratio.
All I can think of is a blocked fuel filter leaning out your mixture when you lay into it to accelerate...
I found that in addition to the fuel filter close to the carb, there was a larger inline filter back closer to the tank, then again mine is not a truck, only similarity is the 460...
