Traction bars?
Traction bars?
Any one have them? Did you make them or buy them. I am sick of the axle warp I get with the very weak excursion springs. The axle warp I get is just stupid some times. I think that is what cause my pinon seal to go on the 01 cause that back axle is always moving it seems especially 4X4ing. I know you can swap 250 spring into our truck but can you swap 350 springs?
Thanks
Nick
Thanks
Nick
250/350 springs are the same dimensions Nick, so they are interchangeable.
Greg (SuperDoodie) had a friend make him a set of bars for his 250. Greg PM'd me the pictures and they look good, and if I had the cash, I'd have already ordered a set, but since they are pricey, I can't swing it at this time.
There are others available from company's on the 'net, of varying quality, that you can choose from.

Lotta newb Lightning guys have torn up their driveshaft because they didn't have traction bars.
Scott, how much did that setup cost?

Nick,
What exactly are you trying to solve?
If it is purely 4 wheeling...and you have a stock height Ex...I would think anything that hangs BELOW your axle will be a liability off road...
Personally I would think you would be better served by installing a set of higher spring rate springs (i.e. 250/350 springs) in the rear of your Ex. Some guys use landyot radius rods to 'pin' the axle and stop axle wrap/rear steer. Also the addition of the RAS (which installs on TOP of the leaf springs will effectively increase the spring rate and slow axle wrap...
The factory anti-wrap leaf only works under 'acceleration' conditions...it does nothing under braking or when your trailer tongue PUSHES on the rear of the Ex either...
Just some thoughts.
Good luck,
Joe.

I was going to mention them as well. Would these work to cure the problem?

I think he has axle wrap induced by severe off road terrain angles?...but I'm not 100% sure.
Landyots in 'general' will cure axle wrap due to how they are made...they basically PIN the axle from moving fore or aft. The Landyots do not allow one end of the axle to move relative to the other or independent of the other for that matter. It is ONE way to solve the phenom of axle wrapping.
Strong springs also cure this but in a different way...they provide RESISTANCE to the motion to cure it.
Remember ALL leaf sprung vehicles suffer from this affliction...some more than others and the taller the spacer block BETWEEN the axle and springs...the more potential for an issue there is...the Ex has a fairly large spacer block and compound that with lower spring rate leaf springs...a bad combo from the get go...
The topic of rear steer, wander, axle wrap, etc has been covered many times...and unfortunately what one person calls one thing...another calls something else.
For me in my experiences with the Ex...thankfully the only time I have experienced any of these 'features' is when I am hitched up to my 9000# trailer with 1100-1200#'s of tongue weight hanging on the rear of the Ex...under these conditions...and ONLY when braking or navigating a turn...when the tongue weight of the trailer is allowed to PUSH on the rear of the Ex and I'm not going straight...is when I would feel the rear of the Ex slightly steer the equation...that extra weight 'flexing' the springs in an uneven condition would cause that rear axle to go slightly off straight and the rear of the Ex would drift slightly in the curve...not alarming at all under MOST conditions...but not what you want when you are towing...and especially when road conditions are suboptimal!...
So what I did was install the RAS...the RAS gives those rear springs some extra capacity...and extra resistance to that phenom...I have been very pleased with this mod.
Stronger F250/350 springs would also do the same thing.
I am a fan of either the RAS or F250/350 springs for one reason...they give you TWO benefits in ONE modification...by giving you stiffer springs...they give you more spring capacity to carry heavier loads (I tow remember)...also by giving you stiffer springs...they give you more resistance to rear steer/axle wrapping.
A set of traction bars or Landyots will give you only ONE of these benefits...the resistance to rear steer/axle wrapping as neither of these products boost rear spring capacity...so since I primarily use my Ex as a heavy tow vehicle...rear spring capacity is critical to me.
Now many people that have added Landyots don't tow...and the Landyots are an excellent product. I have seen them personally and met Ken the manufacturer personally...his product is very well made and top notch and certainly solves the rear steer/axle wrap issue we suffer from.
Others that do tow and went Landyots...also added air bags for added rear spring capacity...for me...I always look for one product that will do more than one task if possible...I was able to find the RAS for ~$200 versus Landyots for ~$350 + air bags for ~$200 (manual fill version).
So for those people that do not tow and don't care about extra rear spring capacity...the Landyots WILL solve the rear steer/axle wrap issue alone.
But like I said...when off-roading (like it sounds Nick is primarily doing since his dad has a monster F450 as a TV now!)...anything that hangs below the frame area can be an area to get hung up on...while the Landyots do not hang below the axle...they mount similar to scotts traction bars pictured above...remember though that scott has a serious lift on his Ex with oversized tires...Nick's Ex is stock height and stock tires (I believe)...
Hope this helps.
Good luck,
joe.
Hey everyone!!! It's been some time since my last post... We're (the boys) kinda between sports seasons.
Anyhow, LANDYOT is still making his RR's... here's a message I found from him in cyberspace....
Updated 09/29/09 - I apologize, but I have no radius-rods available. I am not certain when I'll have more, but I'm thinking it may be sometime in 2010. Feel free to contact me for the info-pack.
