Went to drive my truck to work last night, and all it did was mis-shift and lock up on me, took me 30 minutes to drive it 2 minutes down the road, I got frustrated, turned it around (by pushing since I couldn't get it into reverse) and then I couldnt get it out of 2nd, so I parked it.
Jeff, I'm a gonna tell you once how to shift the ol truck. You are just doing it wrong.
Pull the lever towards the steering wheel when lifting of 1st gear. Let it fall completely downward in N and slightly pull it again when going into 2nd. Straight down for 3rd.
You are pushing it from 1st toward 2nd without full release and it is binding. Should you do it again get out raise the hood and pull the lever closest to the firewall up and it will be free.
I used to keep a hammer in my truck so my wife could get it unjammed, when she drove it. It never happened with me.
My shifter is sloppy and loose so I never know when I am in gear or neutral, its toward me and down for 1st, away from me and up for 2nd, and away and down for 3rd right?

Correct! The bushings on the shift arms are shot. That issue has been addressed several times in the last 60 days. Bill da Dummy has posted the part numbers.
Most folk want to start pushing the lever towards the dash when shifting to 2nd. I am advocating a slight pull towards the steering wheel when pulling up to come out of 1st. Let it fully drop towards the dash in neutral, and up for second.
Ford & chevy trucks were both challenged in the 60s, so you had to learn to deal with it.
Another tip that you might try is palm up rather than palm down when shifting.
Go out in a parking lot and practice, you'll get it.
Trick is making it to a parking lot... I bought the new bushings, don't have a clue how to replace them. Sometimes I do have to Force the shifter, right now its stuck in the driveway in 2nd gear :-(
If your going to own one of these old Fords you got to learn how to work on them. It's kind of a "On the Job Training Program." The aftermarket floor shifters come with a complete set of instructions, get a friend with some experience and just take your time. Knowledge is a wonderful thing!!

I had planned on being able to drive it :-( It does me no good when it just sits ya know, and I am scared it'll lock up on me in the middle of an intersection
