I am surprised that at 6'6", you don't find the edge roomy enough. I am 6'8' and I don't have any problems fitting in. We do have the vista roof, maybe that is the difference.
My height is in my torso. When my 7'1" son and I sit on a bench, the top of his head is just a little over an inch above my head.
The Flex has adequate headroom for me, the Edge did not. Our Flex has the Vista roof and actually has less headroom than a Flex without the "hole in the roof" option.
My wife and I have owned both the Edge and the Flex. We bought a 2007 Edge SEL Plus when they first hit the market. The SEL Plus is basically the same as the new Limited models. The only option we didn't get was the AWD. I have a 4wd truck if the weather gets too bad. We had zero complaints about the Edge. There is more room behind the back seats then would think. The Vista Roof is well worth the money, in our opinion.
We traded this summer the '07 Edge for a 2009 Flex Limited. I being a guy loved the look of the Flex. The wife not so much. Then she drove it and fell in love. It is so quite and rides great. Love the added towing capacity that the Flex has over the Edge (4500 vs. 2500 if I recall correctly). I have had only 3 complaints about the Flex in the first 10,000 miles. One, the Vista roof doesn't have as big an opening as the Edge, plus when open makes more noise then the Edge did when open. Second, the early Flex models (which ours is) keeps making brake grinding noise. Ford keeps coming up with different fixes, just can't seem to get it right. It's a minor problem and does not effect the braking at all. The final problem with the Flex is I wish I would have waited 1 yr and got the Ecoboost engine. The Flex has enough power to get around and I have got over 28 mpg here in the flat lands of Iowa with it. But I sure do love the power of the Ecoboost engine. Plus they get about the same MPG as the current 3.5l.
If I was trying to decide between the 2 it would be a hard decision. The biggest factor for the Flex for us was room. We have 2 kids (1 and 3), so both are in car seats. The 2nd row buckets are great and still leave access to the 3rd row when we need to haul Grandpa and Grandma around. Another good thing about the size of the Flex is you can fit 8'-0" material inside. So I don't always have to have the truck or hook the trailer up to go get something. The plus's on the Edge are size, if you don't haul a bunch of people or cargo around, get the Edge. It's just about as good of ride as the Flex and it's a little cheaper.
Just bought a AWD Flex SEL yesterday for the wife. She is not a car person, and the first time she drove a flex she absolutely loved it.
I have a scion xb as well, and yes, they are fairly similar in styling. So maybe I just like the box design. We also bought it for the third row seating, we have 2 kids in car seats now, and would like a third sometime so the extra room is nice.
Love the cinammon with the white top as well. Got the Vista Roof, TV/DVD. no leather.
I traded my 99 Expedition in on a used 09 Edge with 5400 on it in June. It has 20K on it now and we love it. The Edge is quick, nimble and fun to drive and carries ALL we need on trips.
Our other car is a 2002 Grand Marquis.
I kind of like that Eagle. We just bought an '09 Edge while also looking at the Flex as well. Cost was the biggest determining factor. We also dont have the need for the 3rd row seat.
i suggested my wife go and look at the flex. she did and brought one home. we're seniors and we both love it. just the two of us but we often have others ride with us and the rear (2nd row) leg room is awesome. i love the looks of it and it will move when you floor it. its great for taking the large dogs we have to the groomers and bringing home groceries. anyone needing room for people or cargo will be impressed if you try one on for size.
I put about 250 miles on a Flex last Sunday...averaged about 22 MPG travelling at an agerage of about 70MPH +/-. Handling was exceptional...very comfortable...quiet ride. Copious amounts of room.
That having been said...I've also taken the Edge for extended drives...slightly better fuel economy...obviously not as much room. Just as quiet and comfortable.
We went down to GR this past weekend via the expressway. Averaged around 75-78 mph. The lie-o-meter said we were getting 22.8 mpg, but were really getting around 21.5 in our 2009 Edge AWD. That's around 275 miles round trip.
Flex all the way. I personally like the styling a LOT (it's polarizing, some love it some hate it), but it's the only mainstream crossover with a distinct personality. The Edge is a nice looking vehicle, but it's cookie cutter.
Then there's the fact that the Flex is the inherently better and more usable vehicle, with a much nicer interior and is quite a bit smoother and quieter.
