hi i have a 2000 expedition 4.6 with 120000 miles.
i just started hearing chattering that is coming from the engine and it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side.
any idea's on what it could be?
thanks.
yes it sounds like a ticking i can hear it when i let the engine run or when i come to a stop and while acceleration.
but it's only from the passenger side.
is it normal for my engine to idle at 600 rpm?
Sounds like you have the infamous broken exhaust stud issue. Look through the wheel well and try to count the number of exhaust studs/nuts on the manifold. If you don't have 8 then what you're hearing is an exhaust leak next to the broken stud(s).
i just check the driver and passenger side manyfold but all of the bolts are in place. but when i open the hood i can hear air escaping but i cant see where its coming from?
is there any other place that i can check except the manyfold?

Is it possible that the bolts have come loose and just need tightening? Before you place a ratchet and socket on the bolt, I'd soak it with some PB Blaster or penetrating oil and let it sit for a while before attempting to apply any torque. Don't need the head of a bolt twisting off because it's rusty. Just a thought.
i checkt all the bolts today and they are tight.
how can i check the ac compressor?
I know very little about HVAC systems, but I think the other member on here was referring to starting the motor with the A/C off. The noise your describing doesn't sound to be A/C related, in my opinion, so I'd honestly rule that out.
Now the only rattle I receive under the hood is from my exhaust shields rattling because I think they're just getting old. No big deal as I can only hear it occasionally.
However, no one here has brought up the plugs either. I'm not sure but Alloro might have been going that way when he asked his initial question. When a plug is about to spit out, I have read that it sounds like an exhaust leak or small pops and such. 'Chattering' doesn't sound like it but it may not be a bad idea recheck to make sure all the plugs are nice and snug (read: not tight). To do it will take you a while but it might not be a bad idea.
i will try the plugs this evening because the rattling started about 2 days after i replaced all the plugs.
If it were me, I'd quit driving the vehicle if possible to ensure it's not a plug. Just make sure all plugs are within spec 7 - 15 ft lbs of torque. Let us know.
