Regen in driver control!

I finally got to ask the question...

<TABLE><TBODY><TR vAlign=top><TD class=viewer_text>[Comment From Scott in MDScott in MD: ]
I submitted a idea to ford about the regen issues with the current 6.4 that I have. There is no driver option to control the regen process. Why not include a button to self clean? Or a warning that you need to clean in XX miles. Current system may want you to clean when you just stop at home. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Thanks for the suggestion, Scott. We will take a look at offering a driver option for regen so long as it still meets the appropriate emissions requirements. </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

LOL, that was you!? I just saw that. Good question.

I asked him this:

Will the 6.7L do away with the "in-cylinder dosing" method of fuel delivery for the DPF regeneration cycle?

Chris Brewer: No--we still need to burn "rich" fuel during a regen cycle for the cleaning of the DPF.

I dunno....

It seems like it always happens this way...
I will be on the highway for an hour and right when I turn off to go home with in town driving, it starts a regen cycle.

If you could see an estimate on where it is at in the regen...like a "Miles left before REGEN", you could trigger it yourself at an appropriate time.

some good points, I've thought the same question many times myself and
I see Mr Brewer left himself an out "as long as it still meets the appropriate emissions requirements" yeah like that will happen

What I submitted to Ford was way more indepth then above. What I really wanted him to do was to sit and think about it and maybe get my request and study it.

My idea was basically the same approach as they are headed with in the UREA approach.

Message center indicates that you need to clean the filter. Gives you the option to control the cleaning based upon a prompt.

Don't do anything and it will clean in xx miles. Would give a person the option not to clean if you are just getting ready for a stop or if you are in city traffic.

If you don't clean it within the specified period then it would automatically clean.

I beleive it is more of a programming issue that needs to be addressed. That is all. Sensors are already in place to do this.

I think the urea is more of a continual, slow release whenever the engine is running to reduce NOx levels right?

Your idea for regeneration makes complete sense. The display could read; "xx miles until regeneration, or press the regen button to complete the cycle NOW." They could start the alert at the 50-mile countdown like the low-fuel warning.

When my DPF was on, there were countless times that it happened pulling into a parking lot, or just finishing a highway drive.

I wish my follow-up question were posted. I asked about the in-cylinder dosing for a simple yes or no, to get the facts... then went into detail about fuel-dilution on the 6.4 and asked if anything has been done to prevent that in the second question. Oh well... we'll all know soon enough I guess. For their sake, I hope they did it right this time. They do work hard at it.
