I recently did a brake job on the rear axle of my truck. I replaced the shoes and checked everything out. After putting it back together, the drum started heating up and lightly locking up on gravel until the truck got warm. I thought the e-brake cable was bound up (as my friend had his get bound up) so I replaced the cable. The same problem remained. I have since replaced everything....the brake cylinder, springs, shoes, self adjuster, and drum. The thing still gets hot. I checked the axle tube and it is cool as a cucumber. The drum seems to be where the heat is coming from. It gets hot enough to get the wheel pretty warm. I am lost at this point. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks in advance for your help.
My truck is a '97 F-250 HD 4x4 Supercab with the 7.3 Powerstroke.
One side only? Are they both adjusted the same? Sounds like one side is adjusted too tight to me. Have you checked to make sure the ebrake pedal is coming all the way up? If not you could always grease the drum and hen it wont drag at all, (wont stop for that matter either lol.)
The problem is only on the driver's side. Knowing that adjusting it out too far might have been the problem, this last time, I adjusted the shoes out with the drum off. Far enough out the drum would slip on. The problem still exists. I just checked the e-brake cable, and the pedal is all the way up, and the cable seems slacked. I am still lost with this problem.
You have a brake dragging. Jack up the wheel and see if it turns free. If not, loosen the bleeder screw and let some brake fluid out and see if that makes it any better. You have either a brake adjuster adjusted too tight, or a brake cylinder that's not releasing. If I remember correctly you need to pull the hub to do a brake job on these trucks, don't you? Or does it have slip drums? Slip drums are drums that can come off after removing the wheel.

You need to adjust them with the wheel and tire on. take the little rubber plug out behind the adjuster and use a flat screwdriver to adjust them til they still turn easily then a few more clicks so they just start making god contact on both sides. Then take it out somewhere like a big open parking lot put it in reversre and floor it, then slam on the brakes HARD. This will make the acutomatic adjusters work to set them eavenly to where they should be. They should work fine after doing this unless the springs on the self adjuster (The one attacted to the arm on the bottom with the blade that actuates the adjuster) is too worn. If it doesnt have enough tension it wont ratchet to tighten them. or if the adjuster is worn out and not operatering easily.
