Question

Hello everyone My name is Andrew and i just created an account and i have to say this is an awesome forum.

Anyways
i just have a quick question

i have a 2004 f150 with the 4.6L V8. My questions is

Is the motor in my truck the same motor that is in the mustang?
The reason i ask is there are some stangs here in So Cal that are wicked fast, now i know i can never compare a truck to a car but if there are parts from a mustang that would fit my truck the extra hp would be great.

Finding performance parts for my truck's motor is really hard

At 6,000lbs+, its not additional horsepower that's going to get your truck up and moving at this point, its additional torque. I personally think you'd be wasting your time with simple bolt ons. If you want to really jump up the power/toque, to noticable levels, your only option is a power adder.

I'd suggest any one of the half dozen or so positive displacement superchargers currently on the market for the 4.6L 2V.

Well, aside from possible changes in bracketry and belt routing as well as sensor and wire placement, all 4.6L modular long block applications are essentially alike.

As long as you've got the clearance, you should be able to adapt any one of the kits designed for the more popular Ford Mustang, to work with your truck.

It might be worthwhile for you to look into picking up a junked 4.6L engine for the parts necessary if the conversion.

There's always nitrous as an alternative, but I don't recommend it for a daily driver. Otherwise, you're looking at the usual bolt on engine parts....which in the end can be every bit as expensive as a supercharger and about half as rewarding.

No, it will have to be a kit specific for a 2-valve engine. The Cobra's utilize a 4-Valve head configuration, which utilize intake ports that are completely different from the 2-Valve ports.

Many companies like Kenne Bell, Tork Tech, FRPP, Roush, Saleen have and many currently still do make great bolt on kits for the 4.6L 2V engine. Your best bet for a totally customizable set up would be with Tork Tech. You can actually buy the parts separately and supply your own blower and/or intercooler if in fact you’re able to pick yourself up your own through local wreckers, Ebay, Cragslist, etc). 7

Now that being said, don’t take offence to this, but on second though....unless you're having someone to do the change over for you, you might not want to get into it. It won't be a job for a novice. There may be some custom fabrication involved and if you're caught in unfamiliar territory, without a basic knowledge of the engine lay out (which seems apparent based on your above posts) you could get in over your head. I’d hate to see you drop thousands of dollars into a project, just to have to give up on it because you ran out of money, or were in over your head from a technical standpoint.

ya gearbanger i hear what you are saying.

but arent the mustang gt 2 vaulves? why wouldnt the s/c off a mustang gt fit?

or even better question is the block the same on all 4.6.l?

because if i dont blow it then maybe at lease some 32 valve heads would make a big increase in power

Mustang GT's are 16-Valve engines (2-valves per cylinder) from '96-'04 yes, but the '96-'04 Cobra's are 32-valve engines (4-Valves per cylinder).

Your truck sports a 2-Valve per cylinder head configuration utilizing the same long block (block, pistons, PI Heads and cams) as the Mustang. The only major differences between your engine and the one used in the Mustang is intake and computer tuning.

The modular blocks are essentially all the same, with subtle differences. The rotating assemblies however are different between the GT and the Cobra. The Cobra has a tougher steel crank than the GT and if it’s an '03-'04 it’s also got forged rods and pistons. The piston dish between the 2-Valve engine and the 4-valve engine is considerably different as well.

The 32-valve heads will work with your engine, but you’ll also need the timing cover, valve covers, front accessory brackets and manifolds from a pre-’05 Lincoln Navigator or Mark LT. Not to mention a Mach 1/Mercury Marauder or the previously aforementioned Lincoln truck intake manifold to top it all off. Keep in mind also, your compression levels are going to drop drastically with the 4-Valve heads….which is going to hurt performance.

You’d actually be further ahead getting yourself a ’93-01 Cobra or Lincoln Mark VIII block. It’s made of aluminum for starters which will knock a good 70lbs off the front end of the vehicle and also bump your compression up into the 11:1 compression ratio range, which will help aid in torque production.
Let me know which you decide and I can probably point you in the right direction.

As far as the heads go....your '04 has the same heads and cams that the Mustang does....so any aftermarket head that would work for one of them, will work for your engine. The only ones really worth the effort right now are the new Trick Flow castings. The Mustang guys are getting some impressive horsepower and torque figures out of them with suporting components. Buy you're really going to need a better intake and a full host of bolt ons (inlet/exhaust upgrades, cams, etc), or some form of power adder to really take full advantage of them.

To be honest....for what it would cost you to ad an real power and more importantly "torque" to your 4.6L, you could probably swap a used 5.4L from a local wrecker in there and be done with it. Even if its an older 2-valve model, the torque difference would be significant by comparision. Food for thought.

...and if you later on decided to go with Trick Flow heads and bolt ons, you'd have a much better (more displacement) platform to start with.

HI Andrew,

Hey call Vortech their kit for your application goes up to 2002. They may be able to tell you what kit of theirs would work on your truck.

It might be a matter of buying a tuner kit, and having a dyno shop custom tune it for you.

I was a dealer for those guys for 5 yrs before I came on board here. They have an awesome product, and I never had any issues with anything from those guys.

Here's a link over to the truck section on their site.

VORTECH SYSTEMS: Ford Truck/SUV | Vortech Superchargers

Hope this helps yah,

Tony
