Good point John on checking the width of the tow dolly. Never gave that a thought. I haven't picked up the truck(1965 F100 styleside) so I'm not sure about the truck out -to- out tread width .but the dolly measures 79 inches between bedsides. My E250 van is too wide by about an inch or two but I suspect the 1965 treadwidth was narrower than 79 inches. I don't want to hitch up the dolly, drive several hours and find out the truck is too wide for the dolly. Any help is greatly appreciated. Lefty Rodan
It fits, the issue isnt the width it's the tire straps. I towed the 66' home 650 miles with one. However I used a chain over the I beams for insurance and stopped every 50miles or so to check the straps. The straps are designed for 14" & smaller tires. When I went to get the 64' I couldn't get the same dolly as I was honest about the location 250 miles. They said hell no!! So i went to another place and got one (POS) to look at and only proven so later when attempting to load the truck. The straps lock spring mechanism was missing the spring on one side. HOLY ****!! "CHECK THE DOLLY OUT FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AND COMPARE TO OTHERS IN THE YARD IF POSSIBLE"
Had I not taken the chains along I'd have had to just leave it and go home. If you have or know someone with an 250 or larger. Just get the flat bed. Thanks guys for making me think this thing out before I do it. The dolly is mine so I know its condition . I've towed a 50 merc on it with 15 inch wheels and the bumper and fender cleared the dolly fenders so I think that will be ok. Good thought about wrapping the chain around the frame as a precaution. My greatest concern was that the dolly be able to handle the weight of the truck but from your input I don't think that's an issue. The dolly has a gvw of 2750 and I don't think I'd have anymore than 2500 lbs riding on the dolly if the truck weighs about 3800 at the curb. Thanks again.
