how hard would it be to go from a 400 to a 300. i have a 4 speed right now and i would like to keep that if i could. im just looking for a good motor to dd/tow/show. ive decided to go with the 300 only if i can fin da good 4 speed that would hook up. any help would be nice. my 400 is slowly giving out on me and ive been thinkin and doing research on putting a new motor on it. and the 300 seems to be exactly what i need. thanks in advance for all the info =)
If you find a donor truck that has a 300 already mated to a four speed you can just pull the motor and bellhousing and clutch linkage and swap it over. And figure out the motor mounts and radiator hoses. Otherwise there are some differences. If you pull the 300 from a truck with a hydraulic clutch then you will still need a find a 4speed bellhousing with a small block pattern. On the 400 v8 the pivot for the clutch linkage (not the ball pivot for the clutch fork) is on the bellhousing and on the 300 mated to a 4speed that pivot is on the block. If you donor 300 came from a hydraulic clutch then that provision won't be on the block so you will have to figure something out to make the mechanical linkage work. The best bet is to find a donor truck that uses the exact same setup your trying to make and just taking the bellhousing and clutch linkage along with the engine. Using a donor 300 from an automatic or newer hydraulic clutch truck will still not be too difficult but you will have to track down extra parts.
i believe i have the t18 or np435. ill check tonight and get back to yall. im and about this clutch assembly. i dont think im going to go with a hydraulic clutch. how hard is it to find this setup?
