just test drove my first excursion

ive been wanting a superduty for a while now, but i decided to give the excursion a chance. it was an '03 with the 6.0 psd and overall i was pretty impressed. The one thing im wondering is why did the throttle seem so sensitive? Like when i stepped on the pedal not only was it really easy to push, but the rpms seemed to go up as if i was in neutral (while it was in gear). the tranny wasnt slipping or anything i just thought it seemed wierd. the truck was on 38s so maybe that had something to do with it? btw these trucks ride like cadillacs compared to my chevy lol

what gears does it have? I can't think of any reason why the RPM would fly that way....

he didnt know what gears they were, but as far as i know, wouldnt taller gears mean you have to push the pedal less to accelerate? i got 4.10's on my chevy and i barely touch the pedal. like i said though, it was the first excursion ive ever drove so maybe thats just the way they are.

Not sure about the gearing, but my 6.0 Excursion rpm's fly when I hit the pedal. It also takes off... If it's not the way it's supposed to be, I would look at the torque converter, may be slipping. 38's are pretty big though, so I cannot attest to what effect that may have as they're much larger than mine. Either way, they're awesome. I can haul 15 4x8' sheets of plywood with my 3rd row out and my middle seats down, and you'd never know it. I've strapped on a 7k car trailer with 6 transmissions in the back, and again, drove like a dream. Seats are comfortable, suspension isn't to tough, plenty of features and options.

Yeah my 3.73 geared 6.0 Ex screams through first gear like crazy! If that Ex had some 4.30's it would probably be pretty responsive! Did the truck take off or just rev up and not go anywhere? The 6.0 doesn't have the long lag like a 7.3 but a 6.0 stock does have a slight lag and then it comes on way strong! One things for sure, the 6.0 will blow the doors off a V-10 through 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th gears because I have done it many times!! Oh wait the V-10 doesn't have a 5th gear!

Neither does the 7.3's. But enough bashing of our own, lets leave that for the chevy's and dodges.

The 6.0 turbo spools pretty quickly and it races through first gear and second pretty quickly. In fact, just this morning I pulled out of my driveway, and casually accelerated. 100ft later I was clocked doing 52mph in a 25mph. Had no idea I was going that fast, it's very easy to do, and you'd never know it.

i mean yeah, it was definately moving. its not like it was making all this noise and not going anywhere. a better question for me to ask would have been , when you guys accelerate at an average speed around what rpms does the truck usually shift?

Casually driving, it'll shift between 1750-2400rpm, depending on the gear, the grade, the weight that I'm hauling. I push it a little, and it MIGHT get to 2800rpm. A few very rare occations I've hit 3500rpm but that's only if i'm really on it. If it's shifting that high, there's something that can go in the trans that will cause it, but I'm forgetting what exactly.

I usually accelerate and let it shift at 1800-2800 rpms just depends on how much of a hurry that I'm in? Hammer down it shifts at 3500 or so!

Now you're exaggerating very badly!

I don't know of any car or truck capable of doing 0 to 52 mph in 100 feet.

With the right size hill and 4x4 launch it would be close

let's do some figurin

1.8 60 foot, 0 to 60 in 4 seconds, carry my one, triangulate the cell signal.....

That's kinda what I was thinking , all it takes is a 125 hp SCT tune& 4wd high and a 25 psi launch and you flying fast within 100 feet! In all reality I have seen these 6.0's smoking Camaro's Corvette's and most ricers..............Somebody figure this equation out! I never was an A+ student in math!

Come on, guys! Give it up. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to calculate the
fact you can't "casually accelerate" and be doing 52 mph in 100 feet.

No Corvette, Trans Am, or IROC Z I have owned in the past would do 52 mph in 100 feet. Even the
fastest cop car I have driven, a 1973 Plymouth Gran Fury 440, wouldn't do 52 mph in 100 feet.

I happen to have something that could do that In fact with my new setup I should be able to do 0-52MPH in a bare minimum of 60 feet. 58.4mph in 60 feet is my goal though. Feels like a dump truck slammed into you when you launch like that though.

Here's a chart of drag racing 60 foot times, compared to mph at 60 feet out. Most descent drag race oriented cars could pull to 52mph in 100 feet without breaking too much of a sweat.

2.3 second 60' time = 35.5 mph @60' = 7.0 second 0-60 time
2.2 second 60' time = 37.1 mph @60' = 6.5 second 0-60 time
2.1 second 60' time = 38.9 mph @60' = 5.9 second 0-60 time
2.0 second 60' time = 40.9 mph @60' = 5.2 second 0-60 time
1.9 second 60' time = 43.0 mph @60' = 4.6 second 0-60 time
1.8 second 60' time = 45.5 mph @60' = 4.0 second 0-60 time
1.7 second 60' time = 48.1 mph @60' = 3.4 second 0-60 time
1.6 second 60' time = 51.1 mph @60' = 2.9 second 0-60 time
1.5 second 60' time = 54.5 mph @60' = 2.2 second 0-60 time
1.4 second 60' time = 58.4 mph @60' = 1.5 second 0-60 time
1.36 second 60' time = 60.0 mph @60' = 1.36 second 0-60 time
1.3 second 60' time = 62.9 mph @60' = 1.2 second 0-60 time
1.2 second 60' time = 68.1 mph @60' = 1.1 second 0-60 time
1.1 second 60' time = 74.3 mph @60' = 0.9 second 0-60 time
1.0 second 60' time = 81.8 mph @60' = 0.7 second 0-60 time

(wow all these numbers just scrambled my brain, I had to re-edit what I said like 6 times lol)

So a 6.0 Diesel Ex with SCT tunes can do 0-60mph in 7.5 seconds. So in 100' you could be doing 50-55 mph conservatively at WOT. That's not casual driving that's putting the hammer down and spooling up then launching! I have seen Excursions running high 13's here in AZ at the strip with just exhaust and SCT tuners! Pretty dang good for a 7500 pound truck! But 4x4 launches sure do help! Anyone know what a tuned v-10 runs 1/4 mile?? 16-18 seconds?
