i plan on building a 460, i keep thinking of new things to do, so this might be another post again of this. anyways heres the list of what i might do.
the obvious:
intake..but which one is best for offroading?
headers
carb..750?
what i need to know:
im not made of money right now, even though im going to college for free so whatever heads are already on the engine will STAY on the engine. I think i would have a mild? port and polish job, 3angle valve job done. Is that a good idea? How much would it cost around?
i MIGHT get a cam kit eventually but dont know which kind yet. a comp 4x4 extreme? or a solid roller with a good stall converter? but just leave this out of it for now because im not sure if ill go that far in the build.
With just that little amount said, what do you think my numbers could be around. i'm gonna say the block will be post 71 so it wont be making much stock. i just want numbers though, nothing else like websites to go to or people to call. i wont be doing this project till next year most likely once college is out for the summer.
you're leaving a lot of questions unanswered for asking for numbers. while the blocks did change some from year, the main reason that there was a major horsepower jump form year to year is that they stopped measuring horsepower at the flywheel, and started measuring it at the wheels. so your block choice won't matter much. if you're looking to cut costs, craigslist and FTE are going to be good bets. a 750 carb will probably limit your power up top, but will keep your responsive down low. if you're looking at a basic build, get the earlier style adjustable timing chain. later engines were retarded to meet emissions standards. a good cam kit will probably give you your most bang for the buck. look at a basic level kit that includes everything: cam, timing gear and chain, lifters, springs, etc. personally i think the 460 makes enough torque down low to allow you to get away with a single plane intake manifold, but others will bash this idea. a decent set of headers will expel the gases and finish off the package. if you're persistent, and living in the right place, you can find everything but the cam package on craigslist. i did... the cam kit, i wouldn't take chances on, order from a quality vendor... support FTEs vendors, they're what keeps us open.
hell i dont know. i looked at the chart on 460 ford and that chart uses blocks with the dove heads. i probably wont have dove heads so im sure that will make a decent decrease in power using the same mods
Different heads can be ported, and pistons selected to produce the CR you want. Careful attention to these details can make power similar to what is shown in the chart. Check out these threads. Good points on what to avoid and what should work:
I know how to spend you $7000 and have less power than you get out of the fred flintstone leather shoe express if you want to be really frustrated about a "performance build"!! I would leave it stock since the stock 460s and 429s we've had would outrun the "built" one I currently pollute the atmosphere in.

Well at least you're not bitter about it. I don't know what to say. Give me $7,000 and a 460 platform to work with and I'll be smoking anything that doesn't need a trailer to get to the racetrack with .
I see that by your post count , you are new here, maybe after being here a while you can build an engine that screams.
