last night while going down the freeway (sustained 2500 rpm) it started making a wierd noise....it sounds almost like a gasser with an exhaust leak....without a doubt varies with the engine rpm. after getting off the freeway it kept doing it for about 20 mins but was running fine.
This morning, started it up, drove around all was fine...got on the freeway, and after about 15 mins the noise started again...got off, drove around on the streets and after about 10 mins it stopped.
running at sustained high rpm deffinatly brings it on, and if I am just running aound on the streets (even shifting it at the limiter) it does not do it....from reading other threads my feeling is I could be looking at injectors (keep in mind I dont know the history of them)...the other thing is it has become a B****to cold start....once i get it running, it is gutless until it warms up.
I had the same exhaust situation awhile ago. What my problem was the exhaust joint of the outlet on the passenger side exhaust manifold. The high rpms with the constant heat of the exhaust gases would cause the joint to expand creating a leak which would blow carbon soot on the starter. When off the freeway in town the gap would close and no more leak. Check for carbon deposits with a flashlight and your hand around your manifold ports and outlets.
the only history I have is on the motor itself...looks like a full rebuild about 100k ago, but there is not mention of anything with the fuel system....for what I paid for it I wouldn't be heartbroken if I had to replace the ip and injectors (not that I want to spend the money, but she has made me her value in the last couple of months)
Another thing...it idles high...i see ppl posting 6~700 rpm as idle speed....mine typically idles between 900~1000 normally, 1300 when cold.
