I will be installing a new set of heads on 2000 v 10 this week. I had the truck for a year now with a miss because prior owner did home sparkplug repair and must have chipped a valve. 800.00 for a pair with 3 angle valve job and all plug holes repaired with lock-n-stitch inserts. Now my question is has anyone set the timing on one of these motors? I have the Haynes book for this but the process doesn't seem like hit and miss if your lucky. It say to look for two shiny marks on the chain and to put one shiny spot on the mark on the cam and the other shiny spot on the mark on the crank. Chain slop goes opposite waterpump. Also it says you will need special tools to hold the cams and crank in place. I've done many 2.3 ford in my day and there were marks on the block and heads that you aligned with. Is this going to be a difficult task to time or does it just sound like a shoot in the dark? Thanks for any help or insight.
No "special" tools are needed. There are timing marks on the cams sprockets and the crankshaft sprockets. Your timing chains should have 3 "bright" copper colored links. The single link lines up with the crank sprocket's mark. The pair of links will be for the camshaft-the mark on the cam sprockets goes in the center between the pair of copper colored links.

if you can't tell the diffrence between the coppered colored ones and the rest, use a permanent marker to mark one link, then count evenly from both sides of that link example 31 links on bothsides there for the (31) links you'll be marking with the marker aswell
