I have a 1999 F250 and the E-brake hasn't worked since ive had it. It makes it worse because its a 5-speed and i usually gotta keep a block of wood around to stick under the tire, or i always have to shut it off when i go in somewhere. Well the E-brake will not even push down. Sometimes after messing with it for a hour or so it will go down eventually but even then it doesn't hold. I could probably tighten the cables somehow to make it hold but i still cant get the pedal to press down when i want it to. Sometimes it will randomly go down and other times not at all. any explanation? would it be expensive or hard to just replace all the pedal assembly? I really need my Ebrake because its a 5-speed and it would be really nice to have. Thanks!
i'd just break it all down. theres a chance, "like when i bought mine" that some part of the rear parking shoe hardware has frozen up. sticking out of the rear backing plate on the inside of the rear wheels is a lever that connects the e-brake cable to the shoes. if its not used regulary it can rust tight, making the pedal in the cab unusable. "this is what happened to mine anyways".
but your best off getting yourself a service manuel and breaking the whole thing down, then putting it back together with all new hardware, and whatever it might need.
it is abit of time consuming job cause you'll have to remove the rear hubs to get to the shoes and springs but its something it seems like you have no choice but to do being a standard tranny. good luck!!
My problem is under the dash. I dont think it has anything to do with the rear of the truck. the cable wont even move. sometimes you can play with the release and it will go down.
I would do a top to bottom inspect of the whole system. Yes you indicate it is under the dash that you are having problems so unless you can visibly see a mechanical issue with the assy under the dash I think you need to inspect the linkage and brake assy too. If it works then doesn't then that tells me there may be more wrong.
I have a 2004 F350 Superduty and the e-brake backing plates rotted out. The only place I could get replacements was through Ford, $350+ each. Then you have to add 6 hours of labor at $95 each. I called my dealer and they told me "sorry it's out of warranty". I e-mailed Ford and they were not helpful, so I called them. When I called I explained that there is no way these backing plates should rust out in 5 years, I do not live in a salty area, and besides I've owned a lot of Fords over the last 25 years and never had this problem. They told me they would have the dealer contact me and set up an appointment to look at the issue and take care of it. My dealer called me (he did not seem to happy about it) and I took the truck up to them, they gave me a loaner at no cost and fixed the truck and only charged me $212. So my point here is, if you are having problems and you've been a good Ford customer, call and talk to them. They treated me good.
