Weird banging sound

It's random and apparently timing dependent, but I havent heard it on an engine before. it will happen every couiple of seconds for about 30 seconds, then stops for a minute, then starts again

It's a loud bang that I'm feeling at my feet. It happens more in gear,, metal to metal It's new since i've done some recent work to it (timing, oil change, spark plugs, engine mounts, carb work) ..

odd question but could this have something to do with my starter? if it were loose or something? don't ask why, just bear with me on this one.

i also didnt tighten on my oil filter, ended up spilling out a lot of my oil while running, I cut it off when i realized it was leaking, ran probably 30 seconds 3+ quarts low.

edit: when I said timing dependent, it seems to get worse if I retard the timing towards factory 8btdc.

im also suspecting this isnt an 80s engine, where can I find out when it came from?

I would take another look at the engine mounts. There should be a flat spot on the passenger side front of the engine. Same plane as the head gasket. The engine block ID is stamped there.

Unfortunately, Ford did not make it easy to positively I.D. the year of the motors. The casting codes will be located just above the starter. You'll most likely have to remove it to see them. They will be something like E0TE-6015. That would be correct for an 80 truck engine. D would be 70's, the second number is the year. T is for truck.
Ford did not make a new casting for each year, and wasn't too particular about which casting they used. To positively ID the year of manufacture, you would need the date codes. According to my resources, Ford conveniently placed these on the block deck, for easy viewing with the heads removed. If the block has been decked, then you need a CSI guy to try and pull it up with acid.
You can only be sure that the engine is not original if it's the wrong displacement or a later model than the vehicle.

i've produced a major leak where the tranny and tcase bolt together.. not sure if there are internal seals, or if I just need a new gasket in between/rebolt the two.

this might have something to do with my problems.. I just flipped my driveshaft 180*, it helped some.. but im exhausted.. 30 year old ujoints are not fun to remove. The stupid retainer rings had to be broken apart to remove.. argh.

i hurt
