I have a '78 f-250 without air conditioning, 351m motor. I replaced the heater core a few days ago and after I put it back together I realized that there is a little too much play at the firewall where the two heater core pipes come through. I don't want the core bouncing around (even slightly) and breaking the soldered joints at the main body.
What is the best way to remedy this? Can I cut a couple lengths of heater hose and slip it over the pipes so they fit tighter? Can I use a couple shots of expanding foam? Or is there another way to do it?
I don't mind taking it back out if I must. It's simple now that I know how.
When you replaced the heater core did you replace it with the foam padding that that was on the old core? if not find yourself some foam padding and cut it to fit the inlet and outlet of the core itself and fit it over them and then slide it back in the truck and through the firewall. The foam padding is there help seal the holes through the firewall and keep the heater core in place so it doesn't flop around. Also there is padding inside the housing that fits between the core and the metal cover that you put on to hold it inside that keeps it tight and in place.

ford460,
The foam padding on the old heater core was a black, melted, ugly mess. It must've been original. It was on the top and the bottom of the core. I was not sure if it was required or not. Either way it was not reusable.
From what you write , I do need to support the core from the bottom and also the top to keep it from bouncing around.
What type foam or product should I use. I don't want to breathe melting foam all winter. Thanks for your help.
Most of my foam was reusable the parts on mine that weren't was the outside and the part that goes through the firewall around the inlet and outlet .I used just regular foam padding like you would for a seat cushion it was black and had been used for packaging material in something a had received through the mail. As far as melting mine has been on there for about six months now and didn't melt, the temp of the core should never get above 200 degrees or so and so melting should be no problem. I would say a upolstery shop should have some scraps laying around that they would let you have for nothing.
