It's really impossible to have any real issues diagnosed reasonably until a basic tuneup is complete as stated above. Change the plugs, plug wires, ignition coil, rotor and replace all the leaky dry-rotted/missing vacum hoses. That alone should make a great noticeable difference. When I got my '86 (with the same engine) a year ago, it would start/run, but would miss, stumble and overall was barely driveable. Now, it starts instantly, idles smooth...and gets up to 19 mpg!
ok, looked for leaks and didnt find any. I checked the plug and they were gaped wrong so i found the right gap and regaped them. And it ran alot better but still wont idel right. After all that i put some new gas in and now it wont even start. So I have no clue whats wrong. Any help would be great.
Sounds like it is either starving of fuel or it has a vaccum leak. If you said you cant find any vaccum leaks. I suggest you make sure you dont have any fuel lines that are pinched causing it to get fuel slowly. When you rev it will it keep running?
Also you might try replacing the fuel filter. The old one could have gone bad and cause it to not get fuel.
just remove the fuel line from the carb, put a container at the end,and crank the engine.
remove the rotor out of the distributor so the engine doesn't fire up and push fuel all over your engine causing a fire hazard.if you just remove the coil wire it could cause a spark and ignite the fuel.
i usually just jumper out the starter relay when i'm buy my self to crank the engine.
