I posted this in the Excursion forum with no reply. I did find a damage wire going to the shifter and just added some tape around the wire. I only saw one wire of the three damaged so that's why I taped it. Will this be ok?
I have not had this problem with my F250 but will look at this wire also.
I got the dreaded call…the X is going crazy what’s wrong? The X is a 2004 EB with 98K miles 4X2 with a V10 with no problems until today. My wife called and stated that all of the gauges quit working but the truck was running. Since I’m at work I told her to drive it home which was about 10-12 miles. Five minutes later she calls back and says the AC / Temp is going dim and the window will barely roll up and the head lights will not come on. So I believe my alternator is gone. I believe temperature and oil are mechanical operated so does anyone think something bad could have happened to the motor in those 10-12 miles? She told me by the time she got home the motor had a romp sound like a diesel on a cold day. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance. <!-- / message --><!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --><!-- sig -->

Sounds like it had just enough power in the batteries to work the ignition system, and fuel pump. The romping you heard was probably either low fuel pressure (due to the pump barely working) or intermittent/no spark. I would bet new batteries, and alternator and you wouldnt know anything ever happend! Swap out the alternator, and atleast charge the battery, and let us know what you find!
I did post to the "Excursion and V10" with no answer. I also have a 7.3 (see sig) and this problem occurs on both diesel and gassers. I know the gauges are elec, what I was saying was the actual oil pump and water pump are mechanical. Thanks for the reply.

Reason: more info
I found the damaged OD wire and verified that only one wire was damaged and used some really good tape and taped the wire. Then I found fuse 45 blown, replaced fuse 45 and after 4 days I finally got a chance to start the X (been working OT). It started rough and the motor barely wanted to turn over. I did put the battery on trickle charge for about 6 hours on Tuesday. I drove around for about 30 mins with no more problems. I’m still going to monitor the X and can hopefully put off the alternator. I posted this here because this is a common problem for Super Duty and Excursions gas and diesel. Since I have a V10 and 7.3 PSD I go to each forum to find answers. Thanks for the input.
Usually but not always, the battery idiot light luminates when your alternator is going out. It happened to me about a year ago. I drove twenty minutes home with it on and by the time I got home, the truck was running really rough and lights were dim, etc. Good luck.

You're just driving around on a charged battery right now.
The alternator is most likely dead.
Yes I've seen the same symptom on other vehicles (VW Passat).
Alternator was putting out just enough power to turn the light off but not charge the battery. Only 13v at the battery posts, the light went off when you started it and you could hear the alternator whistling.
He threw a battery in and thought it was fixed and a week later the car started acting up again.
The owner was going nuts, couldn't figure it out and brought it to me.
One alternator later, clear all the low voltage error codes from every system and the car ran like new.
