I am looking at a 91 Ranger 3.0L two wheel drive with a bad transmission. I was wandering what all years and engines have a transmission I can use? Will explorers work? The truck I am looking at only works in 4th, won't go in any other gears the rubber plug fell out and all the fluid went with it. What do these guys cost to rebuild? When this happened to my Bronco I upgraded to a ZF, is there any trans to upgrade to I don't really like the M5s but this truck is cheap so I will deal with one if I have too. I have also heard there is a way to fix the rubber plug problem with some kind of steel freeze plug, if I can where do I get one is it just a normal freeze plug or some kind of dealer retrofit kit? Thanks

I've only got service manuals for 1999 Ranger and 1990 Full size Trucks so I can't look anything up. I assume you've looked on the internet. Have you tried y2kfordparts.com? Or Rockauto would show information on which vehicles have the same transmission.
You're talking about the M5OD. Dorman makes a cheap kit that comes with the three little metal freeze plugs to replace those rubber plugs and you can probably find it in the "Help" section at Autozone or Kragen, sorry I don't have a part #.
I know you can grab a donor trans from a 1st gen. Explorer (91-94). I'm not sure what the 2nd. gen Explorers used.
It is a manual Mazda M5R1. Thanks Slinky I have worked on three of these that had plugs fall out this will be the first R1 the rest where R2s out of full size Broncos and F150s and replaced with ZFs. There is no ZF with a 3.0L bell as far as I know but I figure the M5 will do a lot better behind a 3.0L in a 2 wheel drive ranger than they do in half tons with big tires that pull trailers.
