Man I soo feel for ya Moe. My hard drive crashed just before Xmas. I was without untill yesterday or the day before when I drug an old win 98 system out and installed XP on it. Now I am just barely able to check email and such. I have always built my systems from new parts I would get from Tigerdirect.com. But it has been like 10 or 12 years since I have done this and so much has changed that I hardly have a clue anymore. I tried to buy a new one from them for just over $4100.00 with a 27 inch flat screen. It came down to them needing my bank to verify my mailing address before they would ship it. My bank would not do that so I canceled and am back to now looking on Amazon. There is just so many variables out there that I am lost as to what I want or need. A high end gaming machine for sure.
Anyway Moe I use a utility call System Mechanic from iolo technologies. I have used it for years. And as with the last one if I could have just got it to boot into safe mode I could have run the utility on the hard drive and as before it would have fixed it. It really is a great utility at a renewable cost of $30.00 a year. As to where to find the utilitys in Win 7 I have not a clue as I have never used it as yet. But it is what my next one will have. In XP it's under the start menu, than accessories than system tools.
When you aren't going to be needing your computer for a long time, like a couple hours, do this:
In your start menu, click "run"
In the little box type "chkdsk /r" without the quotes. hit enter or click OK.
a little box pops up, and asks you if you'd like to run checkdisk on your next restart, type "y" and hit enter.
then restart your machine. It runs a check of your hard drive, and attempts to repair any errors it may find. hard drives get errors, it's a fact of life. If it finds an error and can't fix it, it will mark that part of the drive as bad, and it won't try to use it anymore.
But be warned, this can be very slow. I recommend doing this before bed and letting it run overnight. Nothing worse than setting your computer doing something like this and then realizing that you need the Internet for something.
Advanced system care is a third party program you can download for free. It's not hard to set up, but if you don't need it, it's always easier NOT to add any programs.
I guess it was bound to happen some day, this morning it happened. I hit a moose coming home from work, took out the windshield, broke off the side mirror, minor dents to the fenders and a hole punched out of the bumper. If the windshield can be replaced without any body work I'll keep it, it has over 300K but still runs good. I figure the impact was at about 60km just ran out of room between us.
I got very lucky, I'm not worried at all about the damage to the sheet metal and it looks like there is no damage to the windshield frame so will just have to replace the glass and get a new/used side mirror. It was a very cold ride home, 45 miles at -18*c plus the windchill, I'm still pissin ice cubes, lol
Man your were lucky. Hit it with a car and still drive off. Most cars do not fair well.
I be hugging my family when i got home from something like that.
