I'm thinking about selling my 2004 FX4 SC and buying a 2010 XLT SC with the new more powerful 4.6 engine. First off, have there been any issues with this engine? Is it the same engine tuned differently? How does the fuel consumption compare in real world driving?
I also want to know if wheels, soft factory tonneau, and in channel window visors are interchangeable.
I tried searching and had limited success. Thanks for any info.
Wheels should be interchangeable. Soft factory tonneau probably is not interchangeable. I do know for sure that caps don't interchange between 09 and 08 due to the lip at the end of the bed. The in channel window visors may be interchangeable. You can look them up for both years of truck and see what the part numbers are on A-Z's web site or any truck accessory web site. Can't answer as to the engine having problems as I have a 5.4, but I have heard that fuel mileage is slightly better across the board on all F150's than previous years mostly from tuning.
if you got an 04 FX4, then it already has the 5.4, why downgrade motors on the new one? You won't really notice much gains in MPG in real world driving with the smaller 4.6.
just to add to Greg's post, the wheels should work but the new trucks have TPMS (aka the tire pressure sensors), so you're new truck would throw a warning light if you put the old wheels/tires on it (assuming you don't add the new valve stem sensors).
The cover actually should fit the new truck. Caps/shells and fiberglass tonneaus that wrap over the tailgate lip won't fit because of the wider tailgate lip. But soft covers or others that sit on top of the bed rails or will fit. I have the Bakflip HD cover and the same cover/part number fits from 2004 to 2010.
I've had three F-150's over the last four years. Two 4.6's( Heritage and an '07 XLT Chrome package) and now the '04 FX4. I didn't notice any difference in fuel consumption between all the trucks, really. The only demands placed on the truck are a couple of sled trips a year towing three sleds(one in box and two on trailer). Right now there is a good sale on the XLT with the newer 4.6 which has a good bit more power and torque than the old 4.6. I was happy with the 2007 that I had and it did everything I needed very well(had to get rid of it due to relationship restructuring at the time lol). The old 4.6 is peppier but not as torquey. The only real advantage that I saw with the 5.4 was a savings of $50 in fuel on a 1500km round trip towing three sleds... split between 3 guys. I see no reason to get the 5.4 when it will cost substantially more and probably burn a little more gas with regular driving. When I checked the Ford website I noticed that the fuel consumption was listed for both 4.6's and it wasn't mentioned for the 5.4.
I can only imagine the new 4.6 is better than the old so I'll be more than happy with it. I have an extra set of FX4 wheels that will be great for the winter on the new truck. I have a soft tonneau, in channel vent visors, leveling kit front and back, etc. It would be great and much cheaper getting into a new truck if it all fit the new one.
