460 Mud Runner

I'm helping one of my good friends plan out a motor for a ranger like mud run only truck. he's got 460 in mind

It is already bored .030 if we have to we'll go more..
It will get balanced
Stock rods, but definetly open to go w/ I-beams as I would assume?
hopefully a flat top piston that I can make .0 deck height w/
jon Kaase Alum. CJ/SCJ heads ?? don't know much about these heads, 72CC cumbustion chamber, 2.20/1.76 valves I think.
Performer RPM Air gap intake
cam hasn't really been thought much about yet
I was thinking of this Crane Solid cam, .563/.587 238/248degrees duration

He wants to run 12.5:1....not sure how the rods on these motors would like that much power, same w/ the 2 bolt block?

Looking for some thoughts on this. I don't really know much on these motors. Is 12.5 a realistic thing to do or does it take alot of coin? Keep in mind this is no street motor it will run race fuel in this mud run truck, then I want to talk him into building a drag car out of his brother's pinto...lol

first thing is lose the performer intake. It doesn't match your goals or your cam or your stated compression ratio goals. Also mud runners you want rpms.

Next don't even remotely think about the stock rods. Unless you are CID limited in the rules I suggest a stroker. On a race only engine go ahead with a 4.5" stroke for a 545 at .030 (or have hte block checked and if possible go .080 making it a 557)

with a set of flat tops using a 12cc valve reliefs, zero decked bored .080 and a 4.5" crank against the P51 heads you end up at 13.1:1 compression.

Jon's P51 heads on a stroker like that can make 700+hp with a well thought out roller cam easily enough. Put a victor style intake and a 1150 dominator and your good to go.

All about the 545, but just didn't think it would be nessesary.....would love to build one someday, but right now I don't think it's in his budget. So I would think it will stay a 3.85 stroke, but who knows.......

So big open plenum design is the way to go on an intake.....I suppose it's not REALLY a truck motor, so your probably right.

Now that I looked these P-51's up they do seem like a better head that the SCJ. for all I know the P-51 is the head he was thinking. I didn't know there were soo many similar heads!

Both the FRPP SCJ head and the P51 were designed by Kaase. The back ground was that Kaase designed the SCJ head for ford with the idea of getting the business of producing them for them. FRPP took that away from him and decided to go to someone else, so he designed the P51 as a direct competition in reaction, and to make it even better... which it is.

wow, that is good to know, so go w/ the P-51, and tell everyone else too...lol

This motor will probably be a 466....or whatever if bored out more to clean up cylinder walls, Do you think the cam described above would fit well? The open plenum intake will def. happen I guess, for some reason when I see 40" tires and a mini truck, I still think truck...dual plane intake...low(er) RPMS.....lol

What's a good roller rocker for these motors?
What about a predator carb....I've played w/ them a little....by little I mean I've put one on a BBC and it was awesome, idled, ran great to the floor board too!
or do these carbs just not seem worth it compared to a holley?

if your going to go with the 466 look at the trickflow street heads too. There are guys making over 700hp with them. BUT make sure you decide for sure which heads your going to run because the P51 heads require a different piston then stock or the TFS streets do.

As to the rockers best bang for the buck is the crane gold or oen of the varients like the FRPP blue or the TFS black (all made by crane) I ran the FRPP blue rockers on my stroker with a big roller, in fact they are still on the engine after 6yrs of hard racing.

Don't use the predator, I used them in the past and they do work ok just not that good IMO. Go with a holley variant my personal preference is the QFT carbs. I have run the Demon carbs in the past with good luck but some guys have an issue with them.

Personally I think that cam is a little smallish JMHO

That was the other thing....the cam! I guess I'm trying to be too moderate for a big block that 12.whatever to 1 compression!

Right now who knows about the cam. This isn't my engine it's a friends, so I guess now that I have an idea what goes on w/ these 385 motors, I can kinda get started. I just have to keep in mind this isn't MY motor...lol
