A Good MPG Report

Don't know why or how but I had a very good tow experience. Towed my 5er (17,000 lbs more or less) from home (just south of ATL) to Pensacola Fl. Mostly interstate with about 50 miles of non-interstate highway. No wind. Drove in Tow Haul, Cruise control set at 60 MPH. Lie o meter went as hich as 10.6. Had one exhaust cleaning at exactly 150 miles. One short stop to eat. Anyway, drove 319 miles took 33 gallons of fuel. I was careful to fill to same level before leaving and after arriving. Total non-towing miles was less than 5. That's close enough to 10 mpg for me and within a half MPG of what I got on the same trip with my 7.3. I'll see what I get going home tomorrow. Maybe this is just an abberation but I just went over 10,000 miles and I'm told that sometimes the diesels will get better economy as they get more miles on them. we'll see.

Glad to hear it. I usually can't drive 60 but it does not surprise me that you got better economy doing that. Especially with the pretty flat terrain. I would guess that this winter when the air gets cooler, drier, denser that you might get another mile, unless I have it backwards? Do the Blue Angels practice tomorrow? I forgot their schedule.

If you are ever inclined, Blackwater River St. Park (FL) is a real gem. Just beautiful. We like to go to the Pensacola - Panama City areas.

usually mpg is worse in colder weather. I would just die at 60 mph. My hats off to anyone that can do that.

I usually tow my 17k fiver at 55-60 and get 9.5 to 10.5 mpg. I call that good since motorhomes of that weight or more would be about 7.

so much for 10 mpg

Well, I came home today, same route same driving technique, had some rain and a little wind but managed only 9 MPG, and it was an even 9. 315 miles for 35 gallons of fuel. Oh well, Thats a 9.5 average for both legs of the trip so I can't complain too much.

Yeah, i used to be that way but as I got older I learned I needed about twice the distance to decide when I needed to hit the brakes so I slowed down.

Thanks for the mpg report StanleyZ.

Slowing down definately makes a huge difference in the 6.4's mpg's.

Towing I can get within 1 to 1.5 mpg's of my '06 if I stay 60mph to at 65mph. If I speed up the mpg spread starts to increase in a hurry. Empty mpg's are a whole different ball field.
