So, I changed my oil today an noticed the issue in the pics. The pics are both sides of my front end, right next to the tire. The piece that my finger is on for both sides moves freely. It looks like it belongs in the area just to the inside of the truck on both sides.
My steering is a little loose, which from what I read means the ***** joints are probably in need or replacing.
That is just a dust seal for the axle tube. Pretty much all 4X4 Super Duty's and Excursions are like that. Will not affect your steering whatsoever. Check your steering linkage/trackbar/gearbox/steering stabilizer for steering issues.
So basically Ford's design is to have the dust cover come off? Sorry, just being sarcastic. (This is my first Ford and am completely unimpressed with the experience) I hear the Super Duty has issues with the ball joints, is this a common cause? or completely unrelated?

Yep it's common the good thing is the real seal is further in the axle tube so it's not harming anything other than looking bad. I agree it's disheartening but won't cause any harm. That seal has nothing to do with ball joints.
I will say even with some of the issues with SD's I wouldn't own any other, cept for maybe a brand new one!

Once, when I had a bad balljoint(s) on one side, I detected a slight shimmy. Not looseness. I think that many people feel nothing until a joint is really bad. A large pry bar under a lifted tire/wheel will show you bad balljoints.

All I've ever had is Fords. Besides this SD, I have a '79 and a '86 F250 in the back yard. But, now that my beard is turning gray, and I'm paying college tuitions, and worrying about money for retirement, etc etc ...... if Honda actually made a real SD-type truck, and made in the USA, I might buy it. Spit a spark plug??!! Come on!
Who am i bs'ing .... I'm just going to keep buying Ford pickups.
