Computer confusion

I'm changing my tranny from E4Od to 5 spd in '90 f-150. I understand that if I don't change the computer I'm gonna get a check engine light and trouble codes. I called a salvage yard to check on getting a computer for '90 f-150 6cyl 5 spd. The guy I talked to told me his computer showed that FORD used 9 different computers for this engine tranny combination in 1990. Why so many and how in the world would I ever figure out what I need for my truck??????

From a post on the transmission page all you have to do is leave the range sensor plugged in and in neutral and zip tie it to the frame and you are good to go.

There are slightly different calibrations for each gear ratio combination and perhaps california models but for the most part any of them would work. You might try the suggestion above first though.
