Is there anything special needed to add the roof running lights to a truck? I always thought they were neat, but didn't know if I could just drill some holes to add them? Under roof brackets or something. I was just going to pull a set at the junkyard.
I added a set to a dark red '77 F150 regular cab with the Explorer pkg back in '78. The truck just plain looked wierd without them. I took a bunch of measurements off an OE set, drilled and installed them. IIRC there is a connection waiting for roof markers in the driver side door pillar area. At that time I bought OE, including the harness but there is no reason you couldn't use junk yard parts, just make sure the gaskets are still flexible enough to be good. I replaced all the gaskets on Clyde because they were drying out too much.
Yes. It is a plug and play. I would go to the JY and take pictures, measurements, and the harness. Then go to ford and get 5 new lights.
As stated above the plug is on the drivers side by the e-brake assemb.
And make sure you use some type of silicon on the screws
I have thought about doing this too. I was planning on taking a big piece of cardboard or butcher paper and making a template off one of the trucks at the junkyard, then transfer it over to my truck.
We're all sounding like a bunch of OC purists aren't we. I too was terribly exacting when I did it ... and it's taken me YEARS to work up the courage to be able to say, "Ah ... close enough" about a lot of stuff.
IIRC originally the cab corner lamps were all that was required on larger trucks unless you went wider than 80" or something like that, then you had to display the center three lamps as marker lights indicating extra width. The two corner lamps were angled outward and the center three were clustered in the center 6-12" apart.
When I was a kid we had a local freight hauler that had an early 50's C600 that was all painted up, chromed, lots of lighting including twin spot lights on the cab and his forward lamps were all amber except for the center three which were clear. This was early specs by regulation, now they're all amber.
I've seen some Fords with aftermarket lamps with the center three clustered but since Ford OE is a five light spread and the other setup looks a little too GM for my tastes I was very careful to be accurate.
For the true purists among us here's a link to some federal regs: DOT Regulations
(Elvis did that line so well!!!! Try to use it anytime I can, though I can't do it nearly as well. )
It's after midnight, I just got off my closing shift at the big box store and I'm waiting for the furnace I just fired up to heat the camper plumbing enough to keep it from freezing up before I can winterize it tomorrow on my day off. This site is a great diversion .... and occassionally I learn stuff!!!
So .... If this is Waco it must be Sunday morning ??????
Damn, I thought I had shi**y hours. I'm a dept manager at a Lowe's. I get one Saturday and two Sundays off every four weeks. I work EVERY stinkin' Monday! OK, so when are all the national holidays celebrated ...... EVERY stinkin' Monday!!!
I gotta go shut down the camper furnace. Darn thing uses a lot of LP. Good thing there's a bottle of bourbon out there to reward me for my diligence in taking care of the camper. You better go to bed too Darrell. Waco is waiting for you in the morning.
