Ok when I did the 4x4 swap on my truck, 92 FlareSide with a 302 mated to a E4OD, We took the tranny out of a 90 Bronco with a 5.8. I dont think its a E4OD anymore I think its an AOD tranny. The mechanic said it wouldnt connect to my regular truck shifter and that I had to go buy a hurst floor shifter PITA. I was to busy taking the tranny off the bronco that I didnt check the sticker. My truck had alot of "*****" before the swap and after it seems so sluggish and chugs $20 of gas every 2 days. $20 used to get me a week worths of moderate driving! When im under my truck I can see the torque converter if that has something to do with it.
I'm asking this because I read that you could not put a 302 trans with a 351 trans?!?!?
302 and 351w have the same bell housing bolt pattern. they share the same head size, exhaust manifold size and some other external stuff. you could bolt a tranny from one into the other with no problem. the problems you talking about here, if you put an aod into a e4od truck the trans computers are diff i believe and it is now totally confused.
Thats probably it, maybe its a 351C and not the 351w. But would it being an AOD mean it would not match up to my regular gear shifter? It has a Hurst shifter that has a cable connected to the tranny?
351c and w are not the same. the trans would not even be close to bolting up. as for the shifter i would start with tag numbers from both and the local ford dealer, they should be able to tell you what you have in both cases.
The cleveland and windsor have the same bell housing bolt pattern, but it is unlikely to find a 351C in that new of a Bronco. It is also unlikely that an AOD was put behind a 351, unless a previous owner swapped from 302 to 351. The AOD and E4OD use different flexplates. The '90 Bronco may have also used a C6 3-speed automatic.
302 and 351 are different blocks, but do have the same bell housing bolt pattern.
So I could have a 3speed?!?!? Could that be the reason why the mechanic had to use a hurst shifter? And does that also acount for my horrible gas milege? Is there a good reason to have a C6? I would go under and check it out but we got alot of rain yesterday so there's mud everywhere and I don't feel like getting dirty lol.
the e4od is a good transmission from what i understand and have read. all problems i have read about with it spring from overheating.. it is an 4 speed unit so you will get better mileage with it vs the c6. it being the original trans from your truck, you wont have to change anything to use it. the c6 is a really tough old tranny. i ran one for years on my old bronco. it will not get as good mileage as the e4od.
That's what my mechanic was telling me that it was tough ford transmission. I'm pretty sure it's a C6 because I can find shifters for it but not for the E4OD. Now the question is should I keep it or find a E4OD
With the computer, Im not knowledgeable. As for the tranny itself.. If you want gas mileage dont keep it. If your truck is more of a work truck/hauler id keep it.
Im 2 years out of school. Some guys haul some dont. No problem. But, otherwise its all about gas mileage and thats up to you. I have the C6 and I like it. Its just preference really.
