98 expedition 2WD 228,000 mi, has a vibration/shake at 65-75mph. here is the story.
got the truck from my father. the ford dealer that he had doing the service had told him the front left control arm bushings were bad just before i got the truck. i took it to an alingnment shop for front end diagnosiss which they said the bushings were fine, but it needed all tie rod ends and an idler arm. replaced these but not the control arm bushings. also replaced the rotors/bearings and front seay bar links. tires were also balanced, and had an alignment. shocks still need to be replaced. the tires are bfg long trails, and are wearing fine, no cupping or anything.
when getting up to highway speeds, 65-75mph, i get a vibration from the front. i can feel it some in the steering wheel, and also under my feet. it feels like it is in the front left side. does this sound like the control arm bushings? road flex issue? bent rim? or ??? wouldn't the alignment shop have noticed bad control arm bushings?
Check the simplest thing first. Swap the front and rear tires on that side and see if the vibration moves to the rear. If it does, the problem is with the tire. If it doesn't move, then it's a problem with the front suspension.
these control arm bushings go bad before 100k and seen them go bad at 70k, jack the vehicle up enough to get a bar or something rigid under the tire, pry up and down and see if you find any odd movement, or have a friend watch, new parts can be junk out of the box too...
i forgot to mention that i swapped the front tires from left to right and the shake stayed on the left side.
FYI - Before you swap tires side to side you should always make sure they do not have a rotation arrow on them. Tires with a rotation arrow cannot be swapped side to side.
That being said, your problem is obviously with a component in the front left suspension or steering. You need to rule out worn parts such as the tie-rod ends, the ball joints, worn shock, and yes worn bushings. The problem could be any of that stuff and the only way to narrow the field is to get down there and start checking these items out. I know you said the bearing were replaced, but don't dismiss them as a possible culprit. Even new parts are not always good.
