I replaced the front shocks not long ago (3 months) and the last couple weeks ive been getting a bad clunking sound when going over sharp bumps and it rides horrible. When going over bigger bumps the shock absorbs most of it but the sharp ones are the painful ones.. It almost feels like somethings about ready to fall off? any body know what this might be?
It could be a number of things if you can't pinpoint the general area where the clunk is coming from. Radius arm bushings, center pivot bushing, ball joints can all cause a clunk sound. Really bad front u joints can clunk as well, but those sound more like a clanking sound when going over bumps. Does it sound like it's coming from the very front, or more so under the floorboards? Under the floor boards is mostly likely radius arm bushings.
I know it might sound strange but check where the radiator support mounts to the frame.
They tend to rust out there and mine was making a horrible racket anytime I went over a bump.
The whole nose was slamming back down onto the mounts & bumper.
I would say its generally coming from near the floor boards like around the radius arm but its tough to tell. It shouldnt be the ball joints, they were replaced about year and a half ago by the previous owner. Im assuming its some sort of bushing gone bad i just have to find it
Some people have also reported isues with a clunk or crunch sound under the floorboards that can be caused by the tranny crossmember shifting against the frame. I believe that I currently have that issue with my truck.
