I have a 2003 F150 Crew FX4. When I try to put it into 4x4, the light comes on that it is engaged but it does not engage in either high or low range. Someone suggested the fuses, but they look okay. Any suggestion before Ford rapes me? Thanks
Get someone to listen or if you listen to the passenger side firewall under
the hood to the hub solenoids. If they are clicking there could be a vacuum leak on the front differential. Could also be a bad shift motor on the transfer case. Also check to see if your backup lights are working. Sounds strange but if your backup lights aren't working then your tr sensor might need adjusting slightly. Transmission has to be in neutral
to shift into 4x4. Few places to start anyway.
I would start by looking at the vacuum motor on the front axle. First check to see that it's not gummed up with dirt and debris (clean and lube it). Then check to see if its getting vacuum.
My 98 was doing exactly that. I would turn the ****, hear it clicking, dash light on, no 4X4. Turned out to the motor that kicks in the differential. My local mechanic fixed it with a new motor for about $250 I think. Had a bunch of stuff done so not exactly sure on price.
I would get it checked, when mine went totally bad it kicked in 4X4 while I was doing 50mph! without being told to do so of course!
