83 f100 - newb
I have a couple of quick questions, well maybe not quick, but here goes.
I 'inherited' an 83 F100 (was told it was an 82, but DMV says 83). It is an XL with factory AC, it was originally a dark gray SWB with red trim on the inside (still has the factory am/fm radio). I was told that the 302 went kaput and that the motor was swapped for a 'racing' 351. Something about they 302 heads were on the 351....yadda yadda. Not sure how much is true. When I first got it home I worked on getting it running. It would crank and run if I kept pumping the gas, I adjusted the (beat up) carb and got it to idle. I was thinking about just selling it, and buying stuff for my 250, however, the more I look at this thing the more I like it. I saw in another post that people could give an idea what the motor was by the images a user took of his motor. So I am going to post some that I took with my camera phone last night (kind of dark, I will get better ones when the sun comes back out).
This image is looking down from the fan shroud.
This one is of the drivers side
This is one of my hand
and the left side of the motor, there is a bracket that I am guessing was for the AC compressor (the plug wires kinda run through it).Is there any way to tell what this motor is from the pictures? Does the story about the 351/302 hybrid sound like bs? Its got an MSD ignition (just a heads up).
I would like to get this truck back to 'stock' as best I can. I think it wouldbe a great daily driver.
As far as the heads, 1977 and up 302 and 351w heads are the same castings and the same heads except for the size of the head bolts, and the 302 heads can be drilled out easily to accept the larger 351w bolts.
Basically, if your engine has Ford heads on it, you do not have a racing engine. Ford heads that are good lots of power are few and far between.
I think I am going to rebuild this thing and keep it. I like the simplicity of it, no computer, nothing but wires and gas. The body is pretty straight as well, I will post some pics later, since the sun just came out.
<edit>Oh and one quick question, I have some 16" wheels that are 5 x 5.5 will these fit on my 83????</edit>
