Buying a rebuilt 7.3 PSD engine

Guys,

My beloved 97 F250 has been sitting for 6 mos. awaiting a transplant. I have a lead on a 97 PSD motor that has been "rebuilt" and is for sale for $3000. The owner seems legit, says he's a mechanic and rebuilt this motor himself. I think I can get it for $2500 then it will cost $2200 to put it in.

Have a quote for a remanufactured Ford crate motor for $8800 installed.

Any ideas how to protect my self from buying a pig in a poke? Suggestions?

If there is no warranty other than a handshake I would pass. No offense to anyone but the difference between a wrench and a machinist is pretty wide. I've built engines in the past and that taught me that I shouldn't.

that's a big bill.
you could buy a new truck for the 5 grand you'll spend to buy that motor and have it put in.

There is a lot more to building a diesel motor then a gas motor.

I'd tell him to install it in my truck as well for the price he is asking for it.

Talyn,

I really want to keep my truck...I know it's history and don't think I can find anything close to it for 5k.

Good suggestion about getting it installed as part of the deal. Skip

Skip, I have to ask .. what is wrong with your original engine? The PSD engines are incredibility hard to damage. Just curious.

I know what your saying cheif.
I picked mine up for 4500. No rust. in good condition. Just silly stuff.
But I don't know the history. But I'm finding some here and there when I wrench on it.
Like the re-welded frame where it was cracked.

yes, what is wrong with the engine cheif?
There has to be a way to get all that cheaper.

I'm not a mechanic, but as explained to me, an injector problem...a cylinder was being washed with fuel apparently for a prolonged time.

I bought the truck in 1998 with 20k miles...have put over 220k miles on it...changed the oil every 3k, kept up w/ all the maintenance...I'm **** about that stuff so it was heartbreak bigtime when the motor went bad.

But, like a woman that done me wrong, I can't give 'er up! Skip

Not sure where you're located... if on the east coast, there is a guy in CT
selling a new 1997 PSD motor over on powerstroke.org

did the motor hydro-lock or something? as long as the valves are not bent or the connecting rod, then you may only need a new injector, how well was it running before you took it to the shop?

Not sure what hydro-lock is...the truck still runs. They disconnected the bad injector so it doesn't smoke. I start it up every week or so...I can drive it but it's rough and loud.

I'm in Colorado just west of Denver. As far as the crate engine in Az, $6k plus the install charge really puts it in the price range of buying the whole truck...Skip

I think I would maybe either replace the injector and see if the engine runs better, or maybe swap the injectors from one cylinder to another and see if the problem moves to the other cylinder.

I think you should be able to get that engine rebuilt cheaper than buying another one.
If you do decide to go with another engine. Let me know what you would take for your old one......

Skip,
Any knocking to the motor when the injector is plugged in?
I have seen what a split nozzle can do - burns a hole in the Piston. Smokes white like crazy and knocks, lots of blow by.

Unplug it and smoke goes away? Puzzling. Either a split/bad nozzle or bad o-rings will let fuel in all the time since they always have 60 psi fuel pressure. Unplugging it will nto stop it.
I'd swap injector with the one next to it and sew what happens. If problem follows replace the one injector (pretty quick, easy and free to do!). If problem stays at original cylinder then you have some motor issues.

Unless a machinist specializes in power stroke rebuilding, you will NOT find a motor as well built as what comes from International. I'd buy a good running motor/truck before I buy a 'rebuilt' motor from almost anyone, including most engine shops.

If it's just an injector problem you can replace all 8 for under $1000
