Just filled my 08 V10 up with gas at the local "WalMart".....it only held 6 gallons or so....drove it a few yards to park and shopped for a few minutes...when I started it to go home, it had a "miss"....I could tell immediately when I started it something was WRONG.....I drove it home...felt like I was crappie fishing....the check engine light came on and off, and then stayed on.....can 6 gallons of bad gas cause this, or is it a coil pack or whatever its called?....I know it is under warranty....but... I live in far south Texas on the border and really don't trust the dealers down here ( I bought it in Kansas City)......also: can I siphon the gas out, like in the old days....or is there some drain plug or anyother method to get the gas out? If not, I guess I'll drive all the gas out and try fresh gas before I "take it in"....thanks, Larry
I suppose bad gas could do it but it sounds more like a bad coil epecially since you have a CEL. I think all SD fuel tanks are anti-siphon but I am not sure on that. For sure take it to the dealer and have them pull the code.
Like Monster-4, I do not think it is bad gas. If the miss is constant I would think more along the lines of ignition or injector. I would think that bad gas would be causing the engine to run very erratic with pre-ignition or faulty firing in all the cylinders and not just one miss.
The exact same thing happened on my truck when I filled up at Big Bend Natl Park.
After a week or so I kept getting a CEL with an oxygen sensor code. I changed the fuel filter and a bunch of brown crap came out of it inlet side. It ran better, but the CEL, would go on and off.
I let it get down to about half a tank and topped it off with E85. I drove it like I stole it during that tank full. There was a lot of carbon in the tailpipe after I did that. CEL never came back on. It's run great ever since.
I changed the fuel filter again at the next oil change and only clean, clear gas came out.
thanks to all you guys for your replies....JKBRAD, I think I'll try a new fuel filter...could you tell me where it is on my truck and what tools it takes to change it....I just stopped by O'Reillys and bought one...only $6.49...sounds kinda cheap to me?.....also confused why you would run E85....but it did work...oh well....thanks for you info. Larry
Could have gotten some water and dirt with the fuel. I'd get a couple bottles of water remover and add it to the tank.
E85 has a lot higher octane than even premium 93 gas so it would help boost the octane of the fuel in the tank. The high ethanol content may help with any water too. I'd run the water remover, change the fuel filter and run 91-93 octane for a little while. BTW I buy all my fuel filters at Napa, they are a little under $13 with tax but they are an american made filter. A lot of the parts Autozone, advanced and etc sell are crappy foreign parts.
Like DKF said, go to NAPA and get a Wix (NAPA gold) filter. The filter is located on the inside frame rail almost exactly below the driver's door. No special tool is needed for the '08s and up. You will see a squeazable fitting at each end of the filter. Just squeeze it and pull the filter back. Undo the fuel cap a few hours before you do this to releive fuel pressure. Also use a thick rag, because plenty of gasoline will still flow out then you change the filter.
The high alcohol content of E85 will remove any water from the tank. I also used the E85 as a cleaning agent to remove any carbon build up that was caused as a result of the bad gas. Don't use the E85 unless you plan to drive a lot. Our trucks, not being E85 compatable, shouldn't sit for an extended time with it in the fuel system do to possible corrosion and the breakdown of synthetic fittings. A week or so should cause no problems though.
UPDATE: I drove all the gas out and put a new fuel filter on ( very easy to do, thanks!)....still missing......so....off to the dealer today here in Mercedes, Texas....took it in at 8am and just got it back....good same day service....they replaced coils on 2, 5, and 7....they said normally only 1 or at the most 2 go bad....I asked them to replace all 10 and they said Ford did have a "service bullitin" on bad coils, but my truck did not quality ( have the correct number).....I guess these things are warranted for 50K miles....I have 17K on mine....but would probably be a good idea to learn how to replace them myself after the warranty expires...thank you all for your help...it runs so smoothly now I can't feel it running....Larry
