Hello, and thank you for all of the info you provide. I did a search on batteries and did not find an answer that I haven't already tried.
Situation:
2000 F-250, 7.3 diesel
The truck will not start after sitting for a week. I replaced the alternator 3 months ago and the batteries 2-3 years ago. I have had the alternator and batteries checked and both are performing correctly. My problem is that once the truck sits for a couple of days, it will not start because it does not have enough turning power to get it going. It turns fairly quick, but not enough to fire. Once I jump it and drive it for 20 minutes it is fine. I am not very good at tracking shorts (which is what I believe is going on) so are there any other things I should look at before I take it into a repair shop?
if you have the proper meter, you can do an amperage check of the circuits as they enter your fuse panel/power distribution box. this won't necessarily tell you exactly, but could help narrow down the possiblilities.
on our diesel trucks, the engine needs a lot of power to crank starter and heet up the glow plugs. I would check the glow plug relay and make sure it is working properly.
You can have the batteries load tested/alt retested too. Both batteries have to be in good working conditon or the bad one will kill the good one.
I would load test the batteries, just because your alt was replaced 3 months ago doesn't mean it could not go bad that fast. I would clean all battery connections and grounds and see how the batteries are.
Do you have access to an electrical meter with an amp clamp? Check to see if there is a current draw from the vehicle with the key off, sounds like it may be a drain or short cir.
Thank you for the responses. I Just tested the alternator, and also had the batteries tested. So I don't think they are the problem. I think I will get a volt meter and learn how to diagnose a short.
